CEMEX and Volvo Trucks Unveil World’s First Fully Electric Heavy Concrete Mixer Truck in Berlin

MONTERREY, Mexico – CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V., and Volvo Trucks have joined forces to launch the world’s first fully electric and zero-emission heavy concrete mixer truck. The two companies have signed an agreement to work together in improving productivity and reducing carbon emissions through the implementation of electromobility solutions and productivity services for mobile construction equipment and trucks.

The Volvo FMX electric truck was unveiled at a joint event in Berlin, Germany, and will begin operating at the Berlin Spandau ready-mix plant starting this month. With a single top-up charge, the truck can be used for a full day’s work and is expected to lead the way in emissions-free transport in the construction industry.

“Together, we will work to implement CO2-neutral transport in the construction industry,” said Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks. “Our electric trucks are zero emissions and their silent operation provides a better environment for people working at construction sites and for city residents.”

CEMEX CEO Fernando A. González added, “Our partnership with Volvo has tremendous potential to contribute to the decarbonization of our business. Rolling out our first fully electric ready-mix truck is a strong progress in that direction.”

Both companies are founding members of the First Movers Coalition, a collaboration between the World Economic Forum and US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, to make purchasing commitments for low-carbon technologies. CEMEX has recently updated its climate action targets under its Future in Action program, aiming for a 47% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030. Meanwhile, Volvo Trucks is committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, with a goal of having half of its total truck sales be electric by 2030.
