ChargePoint, a leader in electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions, has announced the launch of its Megawatt Charging System (MCS). This new addition to their DC fast charging lineup represents a significant milestone in the electrification of the commercial trucking industry. The MCS is designed to deliver enough energy to power approximately 1000 homes, providing the immense charge needed to enable the widespread adoption of electric trucks.

Key Highlights

  • Megawatt Charging System (MCS): New addition to ChargePoint’s DC fast charging lineup.
  • Energy Capacity: Capable of powering approximately 1000 homes.
  • Initial Output: Up to 1.2 megawatts, with future support for up to 3 megawatts.
  • Applications: Designed for commercial trucking, marine, and aviation industries.
  • Interoperability Testing: Partners can start testing now for seamless deployment.

“Megawatt technology is the first step toward electrifying the commercial trucking industry,” said Hossein Kazemi, CTO for Hardware at ChargePoint. “Megawatt charging solves one half of the electrification equation for trucking. The companies developing electric trucks can now leverage this infrastructure to test and enable their vehicles until they meet – or even exceed – the distances covered by internal combustion trucks.

The transition to an electrified trucking sector promises a significant reduction in emissions, a critical factor given that transportation is the largest polluting segment. The industry contributes over 400 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually in the USA alone. The electrification of trucks is a crucial step towards achieving global climate goals, but the necessary charging infrastructure must first be established.

ChargePoint’s MCS cable and connector will be featured on their Power Link 2000 stations, part of the modular Express Plus DC fast charging platform. This system supports bi-directional charging and will initially deliver up to 1.2 megawatts, with future upgrades allowing up to 3 megawatts as vehicle capabilities advance. Additionally, MCS is designed for marine and aviation applications, expanding its utility beyond trucking.

To support customers’ electrification needs, ChargePoint is offering interoperability testing for partners planning to implement megawatt charging. This ensures a smooth and efficient deployment process. ChargePoint’s Megawatt Charging System will be showcased at the ACT Expo from May 20-23 in Las Vegas, NV.
