Technology That Drives Efficiency
The Conti Urban HA 5 tire was designed specifically for electric bus applications, addressing the higher torque and weight these vehicles demand. The tire offers low rolling resistance and enhanced durability, while ContiConnect Live provides real-time data on tire pressure and temperature—helping prevent failures and extending range. Combined with Continental’s ContiLifeCycle retreading concept, fleets achieve longer tire life, reduced waste, and lower overall operating costs.
Proven Environmental Impact
Since 2019, AarBus’s electrification efforts have reduced CO₂ emissions by over 14,000 tons, the equivalent of removing more than 9,000 cars from the road annually. In 2024 alone, emissions dropped by 4,681 tons, marking a 35% decrease compared to 2018 levels. With around 80,000 weekly trips, AarBus demonstrates how strategic tire and data technologies can significantly boost the sustainability and reliability of e-bus operations.
Leadership Perspectives
“We chose Continental tires because of their operational reliability and durability,” said Hans Jørgen Østergaard, Managing Director of AarBus. “By 2027, 168 of our buses will be clean vehicles.”
“We developed the Conti Urban HA 5 to meet the special requirements of electric drives,” added Hinnerk Kaiser, Head of Product Development EMEA at Continental. “Its design supports our ContiLifeCycle approach, extending tire life and minimizing environmental impact.”
Bottom Line
Through advanced tire technology and digital fleet intelligence, Continental and AarBus are setting a benchmark for sustainable urban mobility—proving that smart tire systems can accelerate progress toward Europe’s emission-free public transport goals.
