In a bold demonstration of electric vehicle (EV) capabilities, eight media representatives embarked on a 1,500-kilometer journey from Kiruna, Sweden, to Mehamn, Norway, home to the world’s northernmost fast-charging station. Driving four all-electric Porsche Macan and Taycan Cross Turismo models, the group faced freezing Arctic conditions, treacherous roads, and stunning landscapes. This road trip, conducted in early 2025, showcased the practicality of EVs for long-distance travel, even in extreme winter settings.

Key Highlights:

  • Destination: Mehamn, Norway, features the northernmost fast charger globally, located by the Barents Sea.
  • Distance and Conditions: The 1,500-kilometer route included icy roads and temperatures as low as -10°C.
  • Vehicle Performance: The Macan and Taycan Cross Turismo averaged a 380-kilometer range with 25 kWh/100 km consumption.

Starting in Kiruna, 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, the convoy set off at dawn with the Porsche Communication Management system guiding the way. Porsche has a history of testing its EVs on epic road trips—think Australia, India, and Europe—but this Nordic adventure pushed the limits further with subzero temperatures and unpredictable weather. The group drove briskly yet safely, relying on the cars’ standard winter tires and all-wheel drive to navigate snow and ice. Unlike controlled experiments, this was a real-world test, with heating set to a cozy 20+°C despite the frigid outdoors.

The journey unfolded seamlessly thanks to Scandinavia’s renowned EV infrastructure. The first charging stop came in Kautokeino, Norway, after crossing Sweden and part of Finland without a recharge—a testament to the vehicles’ range. Later, a quick stop at the six-charger IONITY station in Lakselv fueled both cars and drivers, who enjoyed Shrove Tuesday buns at Marthe’s Café. The final stretch along FV888, a scenic yet icy provincial road, showcased the cars’ handling as they hugged fjords and climbed mountains en route to Mehamn.

Upon arrival, the Kople charging station (up to 175 kW) awaited, perfectly positioned near the Barents Sea. After plugging in, the team savored a king crab dinner at the Nordic Safari Hotel, prepared by chef Kolbjørn Kristoffersen. Reflecting on the trip, Porsche spokesperson Mayk Wienkötter noted, “On many road trips around the world we’ve already proven that electric mobility is suitable for everyday use – this time in the cold of the Scandinavian winter.” The return trip, another 750 kilometers, was planned for the next day with the same confidence—no flight required.

Porsche’s new Macan and Taycan Cross Turismo shone throughout. The Macan, now fully electric in its second generation, blends timeless design with SUV practicality, while the Taycan Cross Turismo offers superior performance and extra cargo space. Both models feature advanced thermal management and heat pumps, ensuring comfort and efficiency. Wienkötter added, “Their real-world range in these conditions proved to be about 380 km, with consumption of approximately 25 kilowatt hours per 100 km.” This Arctic odyssey reaffirms Porsche’s commitment to electrification, proving EVs can thrive anywhere—even at the edge of the world.
