Plug In America, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing electric vehicle (EV) adoption, has launched a new toolkit to improve EV charging access for residents of multifamily housing. The Affordable and Convenient Access to EV Charging Toolkit addresses the challenges faced by millions of drivers who lack home charging options, offering practical solutions to make EV ownership more affordable and accessible.

For EV drivers with home chargers, plugging in overnight is convenient and cost-effective, often costing less than half the price of fueling a gas-powered car. However, residents in apartments or condos often face barriers to charging, making it harder to enjoy the benefits of electric driving. Plug In America’s toolkit compiles innovative case studies and best practices from across the U.S. to help communities overcome these obstacles.

Key Highlights:

  • 20 case studies showcase successful charging programs and policies.
  • Solutions focus on scalability and replicability for widespread adoption.
  • Includes a matrix analyzing problems and corresponding solutions.
  • Features best practices for communities to enhance charging access.
  • Offers a map of charging solutions for visual reference.

The toolkit highlights creative approaches, such as community-driven charging programs and partnerships with companies to install chargers in multifamily settings. “Communities are coming up with creative solutions, and it’s just going to get easier,” said Ingrid Malmgren, senior policy director at Plug In America. By analyzing data and mapping solutions, the toolkit provides a roadmap for stakeholders to reduce costs and transportation pollution while increasing EV access.

This resource is essential for policymakers, property managers, and advocates aiming to make EV charging equitable.
