In an innovative leap forward, Motability Operations unveils eVITA, a groundbreaking electric wheelchair accessible vehicle (eWAV) concept, designed in collaboration with CALLUM. This next-generation vehicle embodies a commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) accommodates over 34,000 UK wheelchair users potentially impacted by the EV shift. eVITA’s design, infused with insights from real-world users, showcases a future where accessibility and sustainable mobility converge.

Key Highlights:

  • Innovative Design: eVITA introduces a reengineered EV battery layout enhancing wheelchair accessibility, seating positions, and visibility.
  • Automated Access: Features an automated ramp for easy wheelchair entry, addressing a crucial need for mobility.
  • Adaptable Interior: Offers versatile seating and storage options, catering to the unique needs of every occupant.
  • Industry Collaboration: Motability Operations aims to work with the automotive industry, emphasizing inclusive design to ensure no wheelchair user is left behind in the EV transition.

The partnership between Motability Operations and CALLUM addresses the urgent need for inclusive vehicle design as the automotive industry shifts towards electric mobility. With more than 750,000 customers relying on their vehicles for independence, Motability Operations’ initiative with eVITA is a significant step towards an inclusive automotive future.

Andrew Miller, CEO of Motability Operations, highlights the importance of accessibility in the EV transition, “The transition to electric simply won’t work unless it’s accessible for all. We’re sharing our knowledge and understanding with the industry to support an EV transition that works for everyone.”

Designed with direct input from Motability Scheme customers, eVITA addresses common concerns and priorities, ensuring flexibility without compromising design. Ian Callum, Design Director at CALLUM, emphasizes the necessity of inclusive design, “With eVITA, form and functionality have been developed in parallel, resulting in a well-considered, user-friendly EV.”

eVITA’s Design Innovations:

  • A reconfigured battery pack allows a completely flat floor, facilitating smooth wheelchair movement inside the vehicle.
  • A sleek, bold exterior designed to accommodate accessibility while maintaining a compact footprint.
  • An interior tailored for accessibility, featuring a modular ‘utility bar’ for easy control access and customizable seating.

As the automotive industry evolves, projects like eVITA pave the way for a more inclusive future, ensuring that the benefits of electric mobility extend to all members of society, including those with mobility challenges. Motability Operations and CALLUM’s collaboration underscores the critical role of design and engineering in achieving an equitable transition to electric vehicles.
