Green NCAP unveils its initial 2024 ratings today, spotlighting the standout performers in the Large and Small Family vehicle categories. Continuing the trend from 2023, Chinese and electric vehicles dominate the rankings, showcasing superior environmental performance. This round of assessments included electric marvels like the Hyundai IONIQ 6 and BMW i4, alongside the BYD DOLPHIN and MG 4, with the smart #3 and the petrol mild-hybrid BMW 2 Series Active Tourer also being evaluated.
The electric Hyundai IONIQ 6, a gem from South Korea, secured a five-star performance and an impressive 98% in Green NCAP’s environmental rating, thanks to its aerodynamic design and efficient powertrain. The BMW i4, its rival in the Large Family Car segment, didn’t lag far behind, boasting a 96% score and a five-star rating, recognized for its commendable consumption and passenger comfort.

In the Small Family Category, the mild-hybrid BMW 2 Series Active Tourer made a notable appearance. Despite a three-star rating and a 51% score, its design aimed at reducing pollutants and CO2 emissions garnered attention, emphasizing that even non-electric vehicles have a role in the eco-friendly transition.
The Chinese automotive industry’s contribution was significant, with the BYD DOLPHIN leading the charge in the Small Family Category. As BYD’s third European offering, this electric hatchback matched the Hyundai IONIQ 6 with a 98% score and five stars, demonstrating low consumption across various conditions. The MG 4, another all-electric hatchback, closely followed with a 95% score, proving the competitive edge of Chinese manufacturers in producing efficient and affordable electric vehicles.
Lastly, the smart #3 coupe impressed with its sleek design and efficient performance, achieving a 95% score and five Green Stars. Its adaptability in different temperatures and comfort-focused features highlighted the growing appeal of electric vehicles in the European market.
Aleksandar Damyanov, Technical Manager at Green NCAP, remarked on the diversity and competitiveness of the European car market, noting the blend of affordability from Chinese manufacturers and the enduring appeal of established brands like Hyundai and BMW. This latest release from Green NCAP not only showcases the evolving landscape of environmentally friendly vehicles but also emphasizes the increasing choices available to consumers aiming to reduce their ecological footprint.
