Geely Opens World’s Largest Automotive Safety Testing Facility

Geely Auto Group opens the world’s largest safety testing center, setting five Guinness World Records. The facility prioritizes comprehensive safety, including cybersecurity, electrified powertrains, and intelligent vehicle systems.

Geely Auto Group has officially inaugurated the Geely Safety Centre, establishing a new global benchmark for automotive testing capabilities. Unveiled today, the facility spans 45,000 square meters and represents an initial investment exceeding 2 billion RMB. This expansion aims to accelerate safety technology innovation while addressing the complex demands of the intelligent and electrified vehicle era.

Highlights

  • Global Scale: The facility sets five Guinness World Records, including the largest automotive safety laboratory and the longest indoor crash test track.
  • Comprehensive Testing: Capabilities extend beyond physical crashes to include cybersecurity, new energy powertrain safety, and environmental health.
  • Intelligent Era Focus: The center supports advanced testing for OTA updates, firmware encryption, and autonomous vehicle sensors.
  • Collaborative Platform: Geely will use the center to partner with global institutions like CATARC and Tsinghua University on future safety standards.

Advancing Comprehensive Safety Standards

The Geely Safety Centre is designed to cover the full spectrum of modern automotive safety. While maintaining rigorous standards for high-speed crash tests and pedestrian protection, the facility introduces a “comprehensive safety” concept tailored to intelligent vehicles. This approach integrates traditional physical testing with digital and environmental assessments.

Key testing capabilities include:

  • Active Safety Simulations: Advanced scenarios for driver assistance systems.
  • New Energy Safety: Dedicated evaluation zones for battery integrity and electrified powertrains.
  • Cybersecurity: CNAS-certified testing for chips, firmware, data encryption, and OTA updates across multiple attack vectors.
  • Health and Environment: The “Golden Nose” team evaluates volatile materials to ensure a “zero harmful gas/odor” standard for cabin air quality.

Record-Breaking Testing Infrastructure

The new facility distinguishes itself through sheer scale and technical versatility. It has secured five world records that highlight its capacity to handle diverse testing requirements.

The center features:

  • Largest Laboratory: An automotive safety lab covering 81,930.745 m².
  • Longest Indoor Track: A crash test track measuring 293.39 meters.
  • Climate Simulation: The largest adjustable wind tunnel (28,536.224 m²) capable of simulating snow, rain, and solar radiation with wind speeds up to 250 km/h.
  • Flexible Crash Zone: The largest arbitrary-angle car crash test zone (12,709.293 m²) accommodating angles from 0 to 180 degrees.
  • Test Variety: The highest number of available tests in a single automaker laboratory (27 types).

Strategic R&D and Industry Collaboration

Geely has invested over 250 billion RMB in research and development over the past decade. This new center serves as a critical asset in that continued investment, combining international best practices with internal R&D growth.

Beyond internal development, the center functions as a hub for industry collaboration. Geely is strengthening ties with organizations such as the China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC) and Tsinghua University. These partnerships recently produced a joint White Paper on the Development of Intelligent Vehicle Safety, reinforcing a commitment to raising industry-wide benchmarks.

Jerry Gan, CEO of Geely Auto Group, stated:

“Safety has always been Geely Auto Group’s top priority over the past 30 years. We’ve always aimed to exceed national and regional standards to set new benchmarks in safety, which is a benefit to everyone in the industry and consumers globally.”
