Google Maps Adds EV Battery Predictions via Android Auto

Google Maps now delivers AI-powered battery predictions and charging stop recommendations for over 350 Android Auto EV models across more than 15 brands in the U.S.

Google Maps now offers AI-powered battery prediction and charging trip planning for more than 350 electric vehicle models using Android Auto. The update aims to reduce range anxiety by recommending when and where to charge based on the driver’s specific vehicle and current battery level.

Highlights

  • Google Maps extends AI-based EV trip planning to over 350 Android Auto-compatible models across more than 15 brands in the U.S.
  • The system recommends charging stops, estimates arrival battery levels, and adjusts ETAs to account for charging time.
  • Energy models factor in vehicle weight, battery size, real-time traffic, road elevation, and weather conditions.
  • Drivers must add their EV information to Google Maps and enter their current charge level to activate the features.

How It Works

To use the feature, EV owners first add their vehicle information to Google Maps. After setting a destination in the car, the app displays expected battery usage for the trip. Drivers then input their current charge level to receive recommended charging stops along the route.

In addition to stop recommendations, the system provides an estimated battery level at arrival and an updated ETA that accounts for any required charging time.

AI and Energy Modeling

Google said the predictions combine AI with energy models that analyze vehicle-specific data. These include factors such as curb weight and battery capacity. The system also incorporates Google Maps’ real-time data on traffic conditions, road elevation changes, and weather.

As a result, the company stated it can deliver accurate battery estimates across hundreds of different EV models. Google indicated this approach will allow it to bring intelligent trip-planning features to most U.S. EVs in the near term.

U.S. Rollout Underway

The AI-powered battery predictions are rolling out now across EV models from more than 15 brands in the United States. Google said additional vehicles and expanded coverage are expected soon. Owners can check vehicle compatibility on Google’s support page.
