The new Opel Grandland Plug-in Hybrid demonstrates a breakthrough in resource-efficient long-distance driving by combining impressive electric range with exceptional fuel economy. The test results reveal that this SUV can cover over 1,100 kilometers on a single charge and tank, making it an ideal solution for both company fleets and individual drivers seeking a versatile, low-emission vehicle.

Key Highlights:

  • Range Achievement: The plug-in hybrid covered 1,115 kilometers under adverse conditions.
  • Electric Capability: Achieved 380 kilometers of purely battery-electric driving.
  • Efficiency: Delivered a fuel consumption of 4.6 liters per 100 kilometers at an average speed of 80 km/h.
  • Driving Conditions: Tested in challenging weather with winter tires and lower ambient temperatures.
  • Innovative Design: Incorporates advanced features such as ergonomic seats and smart head-up displays.

The Opel Grandland Plug-in Hybrid has been engineered to deliver an outstanding balance of performance and efficiency. According to the WLTP values, the vehicle offers a combined range of up to 897 kilometers, with up to 87 kilometers driven solely on electric power. However, a recent endurance test pushed these boundaries even further. Under challenging conditions—including a chilly January morning with temperatures as low as 11 degrees Celsius, and eventually dropping to 4 degrees Celsius—the SUV achieved a remarkable 1,115 kilometers from a full tank and a fully charged 17.9 kWh battery. This test, conducted on 19-inch winter tires in the fully-equipped GS trim, included a mix of motorway cruising, stop-and-go traffic, and urban driving scenarios that reflect the typical requirements of daily commuters and long-distance drivers alike.

Grandland PHEV: Long-Range Electric Performance

Grandland chief engineer Dirk Kaminski expressed confidence in the vehicle’s capabilities:

“The WLTP values are clear: According to the official test cycle, our new Grandland Plug-in Hybrid offers a combined range of up to 897 kilometres, of which up to 87 kilometres are purely electric. But we thought to ourselves: Let’s see what the car can really do. Our new top-of-the-range SUV will definitely break the 1,000-kilometre mark with a full tank and a full charge. After all, the Grandland is ’made in Germany’ through and through and rolls off the assembly line in the ultra-modern Eisenach factory. So we put it to the test – under conditions that are worse than in the official test cycle.”

The vehicle’s performance in real-world conditions was bolstered by its efficient drivetrain, which combines a 143 kW (195 hp) engine and 350 Newton meters of torque. This configuration allowed for an impressive fuel efficiency of 4.6 liters per 100 kilometers and an electric-only segment that spanned over a third of the total distance. The innovative drive system, featuring continuous energy recuperation during deceleration, ensures that the Grandland remains both powerful and resourceful. Additionally, the interior of the SUV is designed for comfort and safety, with features such as Ergonomic Intelli-Seat technology, glare-free Intelli-Lux HD lighting, and an advanced head-up display (Intelli-HUD).

Beyond its performance, the Opel Grandland Plug-in Hybrid embodies the automaker’s commitment to sustainability. The use of recycled materials and the elimination of chrome elements highlight its ‘Greenovation’ approach. With a starting price of €40,150 (RRP including VAT in Germany), the vehicle is positioned as an attractive option for both eco-conscious and performance-oriented drivers. Kaminski hints at even greater potential under ideal conditions, leaving the automotive community eager to see how much further the Grandland can go.
