Hino, Tern Partner for Zero-Emission Trucks

Hino Trucks recently announced an exclusive distribution agreement with Tern, a new zero-emission truck brand, unveiling the RC8, a pioneering battery-electric Class 8 tractor tailored for the U.S. market. This announcement, made at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo, marks a significant step toward sustainable commercial transportation.

  • Advanced Technology: The Tern RC8 integrates Hexagon Purus’ cutting-edge zero-emission technology, built on Hino’s proven XL Series 4×2 chassis.
  • High Efficiency: Features include proprietary battery systems, a Dana Zero-8 e-Axle, and Panasonic Energy battery cells.
  • American Sourcing: Battery cells will be sourced from Japan initially, transitioning to De Soto, Kansas by 2026.
  • Dealer Network: Tern trucks will be available through select Hino dealers, ensuring comprehensive support.
  • Production Timeline: Serial production for the Tern RC8 is set to begin in late 2024.

The Tern RC8’s launch aligns with California’s Advanced Clean Fleets regulation, providing fleets with a practical option for decarbonizing operations, especially in metro-regional routes and food and beverage logistics. The RC8’s short turning radius and popular 4×2 chassis offer tangible benefits for these applications.

  • Battery-Electric Platform: 100% battery-electric with a short 165-inch wheelbase.
  • High GVWR: Gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 68,000 lbs.
  • Powerful Battery Packs: Dual Hexagon Purus Gen3 269 kWh battery packs in a 750-volt, 538kWh configuration.
  • Fast Recharge Rate: 241 kW recharge rate, achieving 80% charge in under 2 hours.
  • Robust Horsepower: Peak/continuous horsepower of 680hp/494hp.

Glenn Ellis, President and CEO of Hino Trucks, emphasized the significance of this partnership: “Our collaboration with Hexagon Purus introduces a highly reliable Class 8, 4×2 tractor option into the electric truck market, catering to a wide range of applications.
