Hydrogen-powered refuse collection is gaining traction as New Way Trucks and Hyzon collaborate to demonstrate the viability and performance of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) in North America. The companies have launched cross-continental trials to showcase the benefits of this cutting-edge technology in the waste and recycling industry.
Key Highlights:
- New Way Trucks and Hyzon debuted North America’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric refuse vehicle (FCEV) at Waste Expo in Las Vegas.
- The vehicle will undergo trials in the San Francisco Bay Area, with additional demonstrations scheduled throughout California and Canada.
- Hyzon’s hydrogen fuel cell systems are designed to provide consistent power, with a range of at least 125 miles and the ability to lift 1,200 carts per trip.
- The collaboration aims to replace traditional heavy-duty diesel engines, addressing challenges like range issues and payload limitations.
New Way Trucks, a leading manufacturer of refuse truck bodies, and Hyzon (NASDAQ: HYZN), a U.S.-based developer of hydrogen fuel cell systems, are pushing the boundaries of sustainable refuse collection. Their joint effort highlights the potential of hydrogen-powered vehicles to revolutionize the waste management industry.
In May, the companies unveiled North America’s first hydrogen fuel cell electric refuse vehicle (FCEV) at the Waste Expo in Las Vegas, marking a significant milestone in their partnership. This debut followed a Joint Development Agreement between New Way and Hyzon, aimed at integrating their expertise to create a zero-emission solution for the waste and recycling sector.
Interest in this groundbreaking technology has surged, leading to scheduled trials and customer demonstrations in the San Francisco Bay Area and across California. The vehicle will also be tested in western Canada, providing valuable insights into its performance under diverse conditions.
“Refuse collection presents an ideal application to showcase the viability of hydrogen fuel cell technology across the environmental services industry,” said Eric Evans, Chief Product Officer for New Way. He emphasized the advantages of hydrogen fuel cells in providing a lighter vehicle with a comparable range and performance to diesel and CNG trucks.
These trials build on the success of similar tests conducted in Australia, proving that hydrogen fuel cell technology is a feasible alternative to traditional diesel engines. The initiative also aligns with Hyzon’s broader efforts to promote hydrogen as a sustainable energy source, including their recent Class 8 200kW FCEV tractor-trailer trial program.
“This momentum and continued interest are evidence that our Hyzon high-performance hydrogen fuel cells offer the right technology to provide zero-emission power tough enough to perform the hard work a refuse truck needs to deliver day in and day out,” said Hyzon Chief Executive Officer Parker Meeks.
As the trials progress, New Way and Hyzon are poised to demonstrate that hydrogen-powered refuse trucks are not just a possibility but a powerful reality, paving the way for a more sustainable future in waste management.
