New Way Trucks and Hyzon have introduced North America’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric refuse truck at the Waste Expo, showcasing the culmination of a strategic partnership aimed at advancing zero-emission technologies in waste management. This pioneering vehicle is now poised for a demonstration phase in California, underlining its potential to support decarbonization efforts in refuse collection.

Key Highlights:

  • First of its kind in North America: The collaboration between New Way Trucks and Hyzon brings forth a Class 8 fuel cell-powered electric refuse collection vehicle.
  • Zero-Emission Technology: The truck is designed to meet stringent zero-emissions requirements while maintaining the robust performance needed for daily refuse collection tasks.
  • Showcased at Waste Expo: The truck was displayed at booth #1341 at the Las Vegas Convention Center from May 7-9.
  • Next Phase: Following the expo, the vehicle will be tested in real-world conditions with Recology in California.

Don Ross, Chief Sales Officer at New Way, emphasized the vehicle’s role in sustainable waste management: “As a growing market leader with a long history in building high-performance refuse collection equipment, New Way is in a unique position to be able to bring this sustainable, alternative power solution to waste haulers looking to meet decarbonization objectives and other clean energy requirements.”

The vehicle incorporates Hyzon’s high-performance hydrogen fuel cells and is equipped with New Way’s Sidewinder XTR™, an automated side loader known for its strength and efficiency. It promises a range of over 125 miles, handling up to 1,200 cart lifts per charge. An interactive display, including a 200kw fuel cell and an animation explaining the technology, was also featured at the expo.

Parker Meeks, CEO of Hyzon, highlighted the importance of this innovation in the refuse industry: “Building on Hyzon’s fuel cell electric refuse vehicle experience in Australia, Hyzon and New Way’s strategic partnership assembled a historic vehicle to eliminate emissions within a hard-to-abate industry.”

After its debut at the Waste Expo, the truck is set to undergo a series of tests on various routes managed by Recology, a leader in sustainable waste management. Sal Coniglio, CEO of Recology, noted the significance of this test phase: “As a leader in fleet sustainability, we’re proud to partner with New Way and Hyzon to bring the first hydrogen fuel cell electric collection vehicle to test in our communities in California.”

The partnership between New Way Trucks and Hyzon marks a significant step forward in the use of clean energy solutions within the refuse collection industry, aligning with broader environmental objectives and showcasing the practical applications of hydrogen fuel cell technology in heavy-duty vehicles.
