Hyundai IONIQ 5 N Wins Car Talk Performance EV Award

Hyundai's IONIQ 5 N won Car Talk's Best Performance EV for 2026, delivering 641 hp, track-ready hardware, and simulated ICE driving engagement on the E-GMP platform.

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 N earned the Best Performance EV title in Car Talk’s Best EVs of 2026 awards. Meanwhile, the standard IONIQ 5 received a recommendation as Best Battery-Electric Hatchback. The annual awards recognize the top electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles that are new or updated for the model year.

Highlights

  • Car Talk named the IONIQ 5 N its Best Performance EV for 2026 following evaluations by the outlet’s editorial team across ten categories.
  • The high-performance EV produces up to 641 hp (478 kW) with N Grin Boost engaged, built on Hyundai’s E-GMP architecture.
  • N e-Shift and N Active Sound+ replicate ICE driving characteristics, delivering simulated gear changes and engine sounds in an all-electric package.
  • For 2026, the IONIQ 5 N adds a NACS charging port, expanding DC fast-charging access across North America.

Performance Built on Motorsport Heritage

The IONIQ 5 N pairs Hyundai’s Electrified-Global Modular Platform with N motorsport technologies. Hyundai developed those technologies through a series of electrified “Rolling Labs” prototypes, including the RM20e, RN22e, and N Vision 74. The result is an EV designed around three pillars: Corner Rascal, Racetrack Capability, and Everyday Sportscar.

Additionally, the model features uprated suspension and cooling systems engineered for sustained track use. Its dual electric motors deliver up to 641 hp with N Grin Boost activated. However, the performance credentials extend beyond raw power output.

Simulated ICE Engagement in an EV

Two proprietary systems distinguish the IONIQ 5 N from conventional performance EVs. N e-Shift simulates the feel of gear changes through a dual-clutch paddle-shift interface. As a result, drivers experience familiar shift points rather than the single-speed delivery typical of electric powertrains.

N Active Sound+ complements that system with synthesized engine sounds tied to driving inputs. Together, these features aim to replicate the sensory engagement of an ICE performance car. Car Talk tester John Goreham noted that Hyundai differentiated the N trim with dedicated drift modes, launch control, race-spec suspension, brakes, tires, and track-oriented seating.

Recognition Follows Strong IONIQ 5 Track Record

The standard IONIQ 5 earned Car Talk’s Best EV overall pick in 2025. This year, it received a recommendation in the hatchback category. For its part, the IONIQ 5 N continues to build on that foundation with purpose-built hardware.

Zane Merva, president of the New England Motor Press Association, noted that while 2026 features a growing field of performance EVs, the IONIQ 5 N remains difficult to surpass. The model’s combination of track capability and daily usability positions it as a benchmark in the segment.

Hyundai Motor Group is investing $26 billion in U.S. operations from 2025 to 2028. The automaker currently operates more than 855 independent dealerships nationwide.
