Hyundai Motor Group has opened a new research center at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, focusing on battery and electrification technologies. This step highlights the company’s efforts to create future mobility solutions designed for India’s unique needs.

Key Highlights

  • Hyundai Motor Group launches Hyundai Center of Excellence at IIT Delhi
  • Emphasis on battery and electrification research
  • Nine joint research projects in progress
  • Plans to partner with 10 Indian universities by 2025
  • Led by Chang Hwan Kim (Hyundai) and Prof. Bijaya Ketan Panigrahi (IIT Delhi)

The Hyundai Center of Excellence for future mobility technology (Hyundai CoE) is a partnership between Hyundai Motor Group and the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs). It drives research in critical areas like battery cells, systems, testing, battery management systems (BMS), energy density, safety, durability, and diagnostics. The projects also explore new materials and components to improve battery performance and design.

Leadership for the Hyundai CoE comes from Chang Hwan Kim, Head of Electrification Energy Solutions Tech Unit at Hyundai, and Prof. Bijaya Ketan Panigrahi from IIT Delhi. The agreement ceremony in New Delhi included Hyundai officials like Heuiwon Yang, President and Head of R&D Division, alongside IIT representatives from Delhi, Madras, and Bombay.

Hyundai aims to grow this collaboration across India, targeting partnerships with 10 universities by December 2025. Currently, it works with three IITs—IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IIT Madras—involving about 30 professors. By 2025, the goal is to engage 100 professors, including from non-IIT institutions.

“We’re excited to work with India’s brightest minds in battery innovation,” said Heuiwon Yang. “This collaboration will help us develop technologies for India while supporting its economy and society.”

Hyundai Motor Group, a global leader with brands like Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis, employs around 250,000 people worldwide. Its work spans mobility, steel, construction, and more, making it a key player in innovation.
