InstaVolt Tops 1,000 UK Sites With GeniePoint Deal

InstaVolt has agreed to acquire 228 GeniePoint charging locations, lifting its UK network past 1,200 sites and 4,250 chargers and making it the first UK charge point operator to exceed 1,000 sites.

InstaVolt has agreed to acquire 228 charging locations from the GeniePoint network, a transaction that lifts its UK footprint past 1,200 sites and makes it the first UK charge point operator to run more than 1,000. The acquired portfolio, owned and operated by Equans, comprises more than 260 chargers spread across parking lots operated by local authorities (the UK term for municipal governments), highway, retail, and hospitality destinations. The company reports the deal will take its network to more than 4,250 chargers once the transition completes. The sites will be rebranded and upgraded to InstaVolt over the next 12 months.

Highlights

  • InstaVolt will acquire 228 GeniePoint locations and more than 260 chargers, joining its existing network of over 4,000 chargers across more than 950 locations.
  • After completion, the company expects to operate more than 4,250 chargers across more than 1,200 locations, passing 1,000 sites for the first time among UK operators.
  • More than 100 of the acquired sites sit in local-authority parking lots, with the rest spread across highway, retail, and hospitality locations.
  • A planned upgrade will raise charger numbers at the acquired sites from more than 260 to over 400.

What the GeniePoint Acquisition Adds

The 228 locations come from GeniePoint, which Equans owns and operates. The portfolio spans local-authority parking lots, highway sites, and retail and hospitality destinations, and the deal includes a framework agreement with several national brands. More than 100 of the sites sit in local-authority parking lots. The transaction is the latest step in InstaVolt’s UK network expansion, and the company says it will extend its contactless, no-subscription charging to every acquired location. InstaVolt’s existing partners include McDonald’s, Starbucks, Costa Coffee, British Land, and LondonMetric.

Upgrades Planned for the Acquired Network

InstaVolt will run an upgrade program across the acquired estate, adding enhanced grid connections, battery energy storage systems, improved signage, and BYD ultra-rapid charging hardware. The investment is set to increase chargers at the acquired locations from more than 260 to over 400. According to the company, the upgraded sites will carry its standard features, including contactless payment, no subscription or membership requirement, and reliability the company puts at over 99% uptime.

Network Scale Before and After

Once the deal closes, the GeniePoint sites push InstaVolt across a milestone no UK operator has reached before.

How the Transition Will Work

Existing GeniePoint chargers will continue to be operated and maintained by GeniePoint until they are replaced and upgraded to InstaVolt units, and customers will keep 24/7 support throughout the migration. The transition is expected to complete within the next quarter, subject to relevant approvals and closing conditions. The deal does not affect Equans non-public charging sites, which GeniePoint will continue to operate for private charging customers, and Equans will maintain its focus on fleet and logistics electrification.

Delvin Lane, InstaVolt’s chief executive officer, said:

“This transaction represents a major milestone for InstaVolt and for the UK EV charging industry. By surpassing 1,200 locations, we become the first charge point operator in the UK to operate more than 1,000 sites nationwide. It is a significant achievement that reflects the trust placed in us by drivers, landlords and major national brands.

“The UK EV market is moving quickly, with more than two million electric cars now on UK roads and demand continuing to grow. Drivers need infrastructure that keeps pace, and that means more chargers in the right places, working reliably, every time.

“Acquiring these sites allows us to bring InstaVolt’s reliability and simplicity to even more locations. It is a clear statement of our commitment to building the public charging network the country needs as it makes the switch to electric.”

The acquisition follows other InstaVolt projects, including what the company says is the UK’s largest single-operator ultra-rapid Superhub at Winchester and the UK’s first highway battery-storage installation connected directly to ultra-rapid charging, at Corley Services on the M6.
