Hyundai Launches IONIQ Brand in China With Two Concepts

Hyundai Motor launched its IONIQ electric brand in China with two concept vehicles — the VENUS sedan and EARTH SUV — previewing a localized EV strategy ahead of Auto China 2026.

Hyundai Motor Company officially launched its all-electric IONIQ lineup brand in China on April 10, unveiling two design concept vehicles at a dedicated event in Beijing. The launch comes ahead of Auto China 2026, where the automaker plans to share additional details at its press conference on April 24.

Highlights

  • Hyundai debuted the VENUS Concept sedan and EARTH Concept SUV as the first entries in a China-specific IONIQ strategy
  • Future IONIQ models in China will follow a planet-themed naming convention, with each vehicle symbolizing an orbit around the customer
  • The automaker confirmed plans for autonomous driving systems developed with local partners and extended range electric vehicles (EREVs) for the Chinese market
  • IONIQ will expand beyond a product lineup into a localized mobility ecosystem with China-specific technologies and services

China-Specific IONIQ Strategy

Hyundai is positioning IONIQ in China not just as a vehicle lineup but as a broader mobility ecosystem. The company said it will tailor technologies, services, and user experiences specifically for China’s fast-evolving new energy vehicle (NEV) market while maintaining its global safety and quality standards.

As part of this localization effort, Hyundai is adopting a unique naming convention for the Chinese market. Future models will carry planet names, with each vehicle conceptually orbiting the customer as the center of the IONIQ “universe.”

“Starting with the two concept cars unveiled today, we will continue to present products that reflect deep insight into Chinese customers and our genuine commitment to this market. Built on IONIQ’s uncompromising principles of world-class safety and quality, we will soon introduce production models that seamlessly combine the smart driving and smart cabin experiences that Chinese consumers demand.” — Li Fenggang, President at Beijing Hyundai Motor Company

VENUS Concept Sedan

The VENUS Concept draws its name from the brightest planet. It features a single-curve silhouette and a Radiant Gold exterior finish. Design details include a lightweight frame-structured roof and a transparent spoiler.

Inside, the sedan uses a driver-focused wrap-around cockpit with layered mood lighting. Material contrasts between soft suede and chrome-gold seatback covers define the cabin. Hyundai also integrated a character called “Lumi” into the interior design.

EARTH Concept SUV

The EARTH Concept is a family-oriented SUV finished in Aurora Shield. Its exterior balances sharp edges with sculpted volumes and includes functional details like skid plates and exposed bolt accents.

The interior features “air-hug” seats made from soft air modules. Mood lighting mimics tree shadows, and the cabin incorporates hidden map patterns of Beijing. A character called “Aero” adds a discovery element to the design.

“We chose to be ‘The Origin’. Something entirely new — recognizable at a glance from a distance, with a powerful presence on the road, and delivering what we call a ‘Best in First Impression’. ‘The Origin’ is our declaration: ‘Lead, don’t follow’. It is the point from which our movement begins. Our ambition is to set a new direction.” — Simon Loasby, Senior Vice President and Head of Hyundai Design Center at Hyundai Motor Company

Technology and Market Approach

Hyundai also previewed exclusive IONIQ technologies for Chinese customers. These include autonomous driving systems developed with local partners and the adoption of extended range electric vehicles (EREVs) as a market-specific solution.

The IONIQ brand builds on a global track record that includes hat-trick wins for the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 at the World Car Awards. The IONIQ 6 N was recently named 2026 World Performance Car.

Hyundai will hold its Auto China 2026 press conference on April 24 at Hall E4 of the China International Exhibition Center (Shunyi Hall) in Beijing.
