The Volkswagen ID.7 Pro S electric vehicle has surpassed expectations by covering 794 kilometers on a single battery charge during real-world driving conditions. This achievement significantly exceeds the vehicle’s maximum WLTP range, showcasing the efficiency and capabilities of Volkswagen‘s latest electric model.
Key Highlights:
- Exceeds maximum WLTP range of up to 709 km by achieving 794 km on a single charge
- Driven on an 81-kilometer circuit in actual traffic conditions in Zug, Switzerland
- Average consumption of 10.3 kWh/100 km, lower than the model’s lowest WLTP value of 13.6
- Not the most range-favorable equipment variant; equipped with optional packages
- Demonstrates the efficiency of the ID.7 Pro S with an 86-kWh net battery
The vehicle was driven on an approximately 81-kilometer circuit in the Zug metropolitan area south of Zurich. The route included main through-roads, motorway sections, and country roads with hilly transitions, reflecting everyday driving conditions. Over two consecutive days, eight different drivers covered a total of 794 kilometers on just one battery charge, with an average consumption of 10.3 kWh/100 km. In comparison, the lowest WLTP consumption value for this model is 13.6 kWh/100 km. Converted to diesel, the average consumption achieved corresponds to only about 1.1 liters per 100 km.
The journey was conducted during the day in normal traffic flow, maintaining an average speed of 51 km/h. At the end of the test, the remaining range displayed was two kilometers. Notably, the model driven was not the most range-favorable equipment variant of the ID.7 Pro S. Despite featuring optional equipment such as the Comfort package, IQ.DRIVE assist systems package, Plus exterior package, and a heat pump, the vehicle would have reached a WLTP range of 700 km according to calculations.
Extremely energy-efficient driving is the specialty of Felix Egolf, a Swiss driver known as a hypermiler. In 2020 and 2021, he completed two record-breaking drives in the ID.3: once, he significantly exceeded the theoretical range of the ID.3 1st from Zwickau in Saxony (Germany) to Schaffhausen (Switzerland) by covering 531 km. In a second record attempt with a larger battery, the ID.3 Pro S managed a total of 602 km on a single charge—across 15 Alpine passes and with 13,000 meters of altitude.
The ID.7 Pro S stands out as an efficiency champion in its model series. Thanks to its new efficiency drive and excellent aerodynamics with a drag coefficient of 0.23 depending on equipment, the vehicle is highly economical on the road. The combined WLTP consumption for the ID.7 Pro S ranges from 16.2 to 13.6 kWh/100 km, depending on optional equipment. With the most range-favorable configuration, the WLTP range is up to 709 km.
Charging times are notably short: in 10 minutes, energy for approximately 244 km flows into the battery at 200 kW charging power. Recharging from 10 to 80 percent takes about 26 minutes.
The optional Electric Vehicle Route Planner in the ID.7 is also beneficial—it calculates an optimal route by considering the current battery charge and available charging stations along the way. It provides drivers with the best charging points and plans necessary charging stops to make the journey efficient. It also takes real-time traffic data into account to find the fastest and most convenient route.
