Wawa Branded Chargers Debut at Eight Pennsylvania Stores

Wawa will deploy eight branded EV chargers across Pennsylvania this year under a white label deal with Electrify America, with five sites rated up to 400 kW and offering CCS and NACS connectors.

Wawa will add eight Wawa Branded Chargers at Pennsylvania locations this year, extending an EV charging footprint that already covers more than 280 stores. The convenience retailer is deploying the hardware under a white label arrangement with Electrify America, which supplies the technology while Wawa owns and operates the chargers under its own brand. Five of the eight sites will run at speeds up to 400 kilowatts (kW) with both CCS and NACS connectors, while the remaining three top out at 350 kW with CCS only. Wawa has offered EV charging since 2017, according to the company.

Highlights

  • Eight new sites across Pennsylvania, from Bristol and Allentown in the southeast to Williamsport in the north central region
  • 400 kW peak output at five locations, with CCS and NACS connectors at each
  • 350 kW peak output at the remaining three locations, CCS only
  • 280-plus Wawa locations currently offer EV charging, the company reports

Why Wawa Is Owning the Hardware

The eight sites mark a shift in how Wawa participates in EV charging. Rather than hosting a third-party network’s equipment, the retailer will own chargers carrying its own branding — a model Electrify America markets to retailers and franchise operators who want control over the customer experience at their sites. The same white label structure underpins Electrify America’s arrangement with WS Development, announced late last year for more than 15 mixed-use retail properties.

Rich Makin, Senior Vice President and Chief Fuel and Development Officer at Wawa, framed the deployment as a test.

“Since 2017, Wawa has been a leader in providing EV charging solutions, with over 280 locations now offering this service,” Makin said. “This move to testing Wawa branded chargers demonstrates our ongoing commitment to meeting our customers’ fueling needs—whether they require electric charging or traditional liquid fuels. By owning Wawa branded chargers, we are always striving to deliver a more seamless, reliable, and consistent experience and this allows us to provide more options throughout 14 states for our customers.”

Wawa’s charging footprint has grown through multiple network relationships. The chain is also a host for IONNA, which named Wawa in its largest single site commitment to date last year.

What Electrify America Provides

Rachel Moses, Senior Director of Sales and Marketing for Electrify America, described the offering as a way for retailers to run a network on their own terms.

“The Electrify America white label offering helps retailers establish and operate a charging network that reflects their brand, customer experience and business goals,” Moses said. “We’re thrilled to be working with Wawa to provide the technology, scale and seamless charging that will bring this branded experience to life for their customers.”

The 400 kW rating at five of the eight sites sits above the 350 kW ceiling common across most current DC fast charging deployments, including Electrify America’s own Hyper-Fast tier. The inclusion of NACS connectors alongside CCS at those five locations gives the higher-output sites native compatibility with a broader set of vehicles than the three CCS-only installations.
