Kaluza, a leading energy software platform, has announced its role as an Automation Service Provider in Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s (PG&E) new “Hourly Flex Pricing” (HFP) pilot program. This step expands Kaluza’s electric vehicle (EV) managed charging initiative in California, designed to help EV drivers cut costs while promoting a cleaner energy grid. By optimizing charging times to periods of lower demand and higher renewable energy availability, the program offers financial benefits to customers and supports California’s shift toward sustainable energy.

Key Highlights:

  • Significant Savings: EV drivers can reduce home energy bills by up to 60% through smart charging schedules.
  • Broad Accessibility: 50% of participants are from disadvantaged or low-income communities, ensuring inclusivity in clean energy adoption.
  • Smart Technology: Kaluza’s platform uses real-time data to align charging with low-demand, renewable-rich periods.
  • Future Innovation: Bidirectional charging will soon allow EVs to supply energy back to homes or the grid, boosting resilience and savings.

The Hourly Flex Pricing pilot introduces a dynamic pricing model where electricity rates vary by time of day and grid conditions. This encourages users to charge when energy is cheaper and more sustainable. Kaluza enhances this with a mobile app that lets drivers set preferences, while its software automatically schedules charging for optimal times—a hassle-free “set and forget” solution.

Building on its California Energy Commission-backed REDWDS program, Kaluza prioritizes inclusivity and affordability. The focus on underserved communities reflects a commitment to equitable energy solutions. Looking ahead, bidirectional Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) charging will turn EVs into energy assets, aiding the grid during peak times or outages and offering drivers additional cost-saving opportunities.

Jonathan Levy, Kaluza’s Managing Director for the US and Japan, praised PG&E’s innovative approach, noting the program’s potential to make EV ownership more affordable and sustainable. Enrollment is open at calicharge.energy, inviting drivers to join this forward-thinking energy effort. For more details, visit kaluza.com or pge.com.
