Kia has officially opened its Gwangmyeong EVO Plant, the first electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing facility for Hyundai Motor Group. This state-of-the-art plant, located at Kia Autoland Gwangmyeong, is designed to support the company’s expansion into the EV market, producing 150,000 units annually. The facility will initially manufacture the EV3, followed by the EV4. This transformation from an internal combustion engine (ICE) plant to an EV-focused facility reflects Kia’s commitment to sustainable mobility and its strategic goals to lead in the global EV market.

Key Highlights:

  • First dedicated EV facility by Hyundai Motor Group, operated by Kia.
  • Annual production capacity of 150,000 units, starting with the EV3 model.
  • EV4 production to begin in the first half of 2025.
  • Cutting-edge features: water-based painting and automated processes to enhance efficiency and sustainability.
  • Plant transformed from a former internal combustion engine vehicle facility.
  • Investment of KRW 401.6 billion and covering 60,000 square meters.
  • Major attendees at the opening ceremony included Kia executives and local officials.

The completion of the Kia Gwangmyeong EVO Plant is a significant milestone in Kia’s journey toward electrification. The facility, derived from the term “Evolution,” symbolizes the company’s vision to move forward as a leader in the mobility sector. By converting a facility that once produced traditional ICE vehicles, such as the Kia Pride and Avella, Kia underscores its shift toward future mobility solutions.

The transformation of this plant, originally built in 1987, took roughly a year. This reflects Kia’s ongoing efforts to adapt to the growing global demand for EVs, ensuring it remains competitive in the rapidly expanding market. The facility is set to serve as a key production hub, reinforcing Kia’s long-term goal of becoming a major player in the EV industry.

Kia’s dedication to sustainability extends to its manufacturing processes, with the implementation of eco-friendly technologies such as water-based painting and automation. These efforts are designed to improve efficiency while reducing the environmental impact of vehicle production.

The investment and transformation of the Gwangmyeong EVO Plant also have broader implications for the local economy. Seung Won Park, Mayor of Gwangmyeong City, highlighted how the plant would position the city as a center for EV manufacturing in Korea and help create jobs, promoting sustainable local economic development.

In addition to its role in Kia’s electrification strategy, the plant will help the company meet fluctuating global demand for EVs, ensuring the automaker can quickly scale production as needed. With a strong foundation in innovation and sustainability, Kia is well-positioned to continue driving growth in the global EV market.
