Kia Corporation has debuted the EV5 WKNDR, a new electric mobility concept, at the Guangzhou Auto Show. Designed entirely by the Kia Design China team, the vehicle aims to facilitate seamless transitions between urban environments and nature. The concept focuses on maximizing the potential of electric vehicles as functional tools for adventure.
Highlights
- Design Origin: The concept was conceived and designed by the Kia Design China team.
- Off-Road Engineering: Features include increased ground clearance, extended wheel arches, and all-terrain tires.
- Modular Interior: The cabin utilizes rotatable seats and a center console equipped with outdoor tools.
- External Utility: A detachable trailer system functions as a customizable mobile basecamp.
Exterior Engineering and Utility
The EV5 WKNDR applies Kia’s ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy, aiming to balance structural robustness with aesthetic lightness. The exterior engineering prioritizes off-road functionality through specific mechanical adjustments. These include increased ground clearance and extended wheel arches designed to accommodate rough terrain.
Key exterior specifications include:
- Recovery and Protection: Front and rear retractable tow hooks are integrated for recovery, alongside protective body cladding.
- Gear Management: A panoramic roof rack accommodates traction boards, while a side-window pegboard allows for external tool attachment.
- Functional Hood: The front features a functional hood board equipped with a built-in action camera to record driver-perspective footage.
- Lighting and Trim: A model-specific light signature and reinterpreted Tiger Nose grille are paired with a geometric bumper and gunmetal trim.

Interior Flexibility and CMF Strategy
The interior architecture serves as a flexible basecamp, bridging urban convenience with outdoor utility. The design incorporates a slidable display with a flat-art Human-Machine Interface (HMI) for intuitive control. The Color, Materials, and Finish (CMF) strategy utilizes bio-based PU materials derived from corn to reduce emissions while maintaining tactility.
Interior features include:
- Center Console: This unit features a rotatable armrest containing a walkie-talkie cradle and an anti-insect camping lamp.
- Seating Configuration: Ventilated, modular seats can rotate and fold to create footrests or additional storage space.
- Portable Elements: A detachable jump seat allows for external use, and the trunk cover functions as a portable table.
- Materials: 3D knit fabrics are utilized for breathable, lightweight surfaces, while the ‘Spruce Blue’ and ‘Citrus Green’ color palette mimics natural environments.

Digital Systems and Extended Capability
The vehicle’s digital interface organizes essential telemetry, such as battery level and range, into a glanceable format. The system is designed to facilitate group travel by managing shared routes and camping checklists.
To extend the vehicle’s operational range, a detachable trailer system is available. This trailer acts as a customizable mobile platform. It supports various configurations, including an outdoor kitchen or a base for drone-assisted climbing expeditions.
