Leap, a prominent platform for virtual power plants, has announced a new partnership with Xos, Inc., a leading manufacturer of electric trucks. This collaboration is set to integrate electrified commercial fleets into energy markets, creating opportunities for fleet owners to generate revenue while supporting the stability of the power grid.

Key Highlights

  • Leap and Xos have partnered to connect Xos’s electric fleet customers to energy markets, providing a new revenue source.
  • The collaboration allows electrified fleets to sell stored energy back to the grid during times of high demand, using Xos Hub charging technology and Leap’s software platform.
  • This initiative enhances the resilience of the electrical grid, helping to prevent blackouts during energy emergencies.
  • For fleet owners, this creates value by lowering the total cost of ownership (TCO) for their electric vehicles and infrastructure.

A Strategic Alliance for Grid Support

The partnership leverages the core technologies of both companies to deliver significant benefits. Xos manufactures electric vehicles for major logistics companies like FedEx and UPS and provides the Xos Hub, a mobile, battery-integrated charging solution. This technology allows for versatile and scalable charging without the need for traditional infrastructure.

Through Leap’s software-only platform, Xos customers can now participate in grid services programs such as California’s Demand Side Grid Support (DSGS). During peak energy demand or grid emergencies, participating fleets can automatically use the energy stored in their Xos Hub batteries instead of drawing from the grid. This action alleviates strain on the power supply while compensating the fleet owners for their contribution. The DSGS program, with significant input from Leap, was instrumental in helping California avert blackouts during recent heatwaves.

Unlocking New Value Streams

This collaboration offers a dual benefit: it makes electric fleets more economically viable and the power grid more resilient. Leap’s universal API automates access to energy markets, enabling Xos to deploy its own virtual power plants (VPPs) without requiring additional hardware. This streamlined integration means Xos can immediately help its customers generate grid revenue and achieve ongoing energy savings.

“Leveraging our complementary technologies, Leap and Xos are tapping new value streams for commercial truck fleets,” stated Jason Michaels, CEO of Leap. He emphasized that the partnership makes these fleets “cleaner, smarter, and more cost effective, while contributing to a more resilient energy landscape.”

Dakota Semler, CEO of Xos, Inc., added, “Our VPP offering gives fleet customers advanced energy capabilities without compromising control or convenience.” He noted that this is a powerful method for lowering infrastructure ownership costs and helping customers meet their electrification goals.
