Marelli’s Key Technologies Power the Return of Maserati GranTurismo

DETROIT – Italian automotive supplier Marelli has announced its contribution to the return of Maserati GranTurismo, providing key technologies for the exclusive coupe. Marelli’s technologies include the e-Powertrain system, featuring three electric motors, that boosts the performance of the new full-electric Maserati car. The vehicle’s total installed power is 1200 HP, and Marelli’s compact e-motor solution, which is fully developed and produced in-house at its Modugno plant, ensures extreme performance. The new Maserati GranTurismo also features Marelli’s Telematic Control Unit and full LED headlamps, including the Adaptive Driving Beam Matrix system.

The e-Powertrain system of the Maserati GranTurismo Folgore features state-of-the-art 800V Marelli electric motors, with one in the front and two in the rear e-axle. With the highest power density of 9.2 kW/kg and the total torque of 1350 Nm, these electric motors provide excellent performance and driving comfort, resulting in one of the best weight/power ratios in the market.

Marelli's Key Technologies Power the Return of Maserati GranTurismo

President of Marelli’s Electric Powertrain division, Hannes Prenn, stated, “Our long-standing technical know-how in electric motors, combined with continued focus on innovation and established manufacturing capabilities were all key factors in allowing us to develop the best solution to grant the extraordinary performance of this unique car.” The company’s innovative technologies for the stator, rotor, and overall design of the e-motors grant higher power density and efficiency.

The Modugno plant in Bari, Italy, leverages on the internal engineering and manufacturing capabilities, applying latest generation processes for the production of the e-motors, including rotor production with cryogenic cooling and stator manufacturing with a unique hairpin’s two-steps forming process. An end-of-line station tests every single e-motor before delivery to ensure product quality.

Marelli has been developing electric motors for over ten years, with electric powertrain product range including 400 and 800 Volt e-motors and other key e-powertrain and thermal components needed to manage, control and optimize the complete flow of energy in electric vehicles.
