The Audi A6 Sportback e-tron sets a new standard with a Cd value of 0.21, making it the most aerodynamic vehicle in Audi’s history. The A6 Avant e-tron also performs remarkably with a Cd value of 0.24, showcasing Audi’s commitment to aerodynamics. Andreas Lauterbach and Matteo Ghelfi, along with wheel designer Andreas Valencia Pollex, detailed their meticulous work in achieving these records.
Aerodynamics have always been pivotal to Audi’s success. From the NSU Ro 80 in 1967 to the third-generation Audi 100 (C3) and Audi 80 (B3), each model has pushed the boundaries. The A6 e-tron continues this legacy by combining form and function seamlessly.
Lauterbach recalls, “From the very start, we placed a high value on efficiency and range and pursued very ambitious goals. Achieving the Cd value of 0.21 for the A6 Sportback e-tron was a significant challenge, but we exceeded our expectations.”
The team’s success stemmed from excellent teamwork and iterative processes. Lauterbach and Ghelfi worked closely with designers, using virtual simulations and wind tunnel testing to optimize the vehicle’s body. They emphasized that even the smallest details, like air curtains and rear track width, were fine-tuned millimeter by millimeter.
Ghelfi highlighted the importance of aero bezels and their significant contribution to the vehicle’s range. He noted, “The lateral breakaway edges on the rear of the A6 Avant e-tron made it possible to achieve a clearly defined flow stall, improving the range by eight kilometers.”

Lauterbach proudly recounted, “When we achieved the Cd value of 0.21 for the A6 Sportback e-tron, it was a moment of disbelief and pride for the entire team.”
The underfloor design played a crucial role in the vehicle’s aerodynamic performance. Lauterbach explained, “The underfloor, with optimized stiffening ribs and breakaway edges, and the rear diffuser, contribute significantly to the car’s Cd value.”
Ghelfi added, “The underfloor is largely finished, and we’ve fine-tuned many parts, including wheel spoilers and 3D bumpers.”
Valencia Pollex emphasized the importance of aerodynamic wheel designs, stating, “Today, we develop and design intelligent aero wheels that are as efficient as possible. The A6 e-tron has special 19” and 20” aero wheels designed for maximum efficiency.”
