The Murphy Police Department has placed two 2026 UP.FIT Tesla Model Y Juniper patrol vehicles into active service. The North Texas city unveiled the vehicles at a public ceremony attended by city leadership, officers, and community members. Murphy is among the first law enforcement agencies to deploy the Model Y Juniper for patrol duty. The vehicles were engineered by UP.FIT, a division of Unplugged Performance.
Highlights
- Murphy projects annual savings of $4,100 to $12,000 per vehicle compared to traditional gasoline patrol units, depending on usage patterns.
- The UP.FIT Model Y is expected to last approximately twice as long in fleet service as gasoline counterparts due to eliminated idling wear.
- Enterprise Fleet Management handled financing and maintenance logistics, while UP.FIT managed engineering and upfitting.
- The deployment serves as a real-world evaluation pilot, with expansion contingent on operational performance data.
Projected Savings Vary by Usage Model
The financial case depends on how heavily each vehicle is used. When assigned to a single officer patrolling roughly 42 hours per week, each UP.FIT Model Y is projected to save $4,100 to $7,600 annually. In shared-vehicle scenarios logging 140 to 168 patrol hours per week, those projected savings grow to $8,500 to $12,000 per vehicle per year.
City Manager Aretha Adams addressed the economics at the unveiling. “When you look beyond the initial purchase price and consider fuel, maintenance, and long-term operating costs, these vehicles actually present a lower total cost than what we’re currently using in our fleet,” Adams said. She added that the initiative reflects the city’s commitment to stretching taxpayer dollars while maintaining service standards.
Officer Safety as a Core Factor
The Tesla Model Y has earned top safety marks from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and other global agencies. UP.FIT builds on that foundation to provide officers with strong occupant protection during patrol duty. As a result, the vehicles address a longstanding agency priority around first responder safety.
“Today represents history and a very exciting day in the City of Murphy and the Murphy Police Department,” said Chief Jeff Gibson. He noted that the department was tasked with finding a cost-effective, environmentally conscious approach to rising vehicle operations expenses.

Extended Fleet Life Reduces Long-Term Costs
Traditional gasoline patrol vehicles face well-documented durability challenges. Extensive engine idling required to power radios, laptops, and other onboard electronics accelerates mechanical wear. Consequently, these vehicles often reach end-of-life sooner than agencies prefer.
UP.FIT Model Y patrol vehicles are expected to last approximately twice as long in fleet service. Electric drivetrains eliminate idling wear, and simplified mechanical architecture means fewer failure-prone components. This durability translates to less frequent replacement budgeting and lower amortized operating costs per year.
Data-Driven Evaluation Before Expansion
Adams emphasized that the deployment is a structured evaluation, not a blanket commitment. “These two vehicles will allow us to evaluate performance in real-world conditions — how they operate during a full patrol shift, how they integrate with our existing infrastructure and equipment, and how they perform in our climate and response patterns,” she said.
Murphy’s public safety fleet has traditionally relied on large gas-powered SUVs. By incorporating electric patrol vehicles, the city is taking a data-driven step toward reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions while maintaining operational readiness.

Partnership Structure
Enterprise Fleet Management provided financing and fleet vehicle maintenance for the deployment. Meanwhile, UP.FIT handled engineering and upfitting the 2026 Tesla Model Y Juniper vehicles into patrol-ready platforms.
Chief Gibson credited the collaboration among UP.FIT, Enterprise, city leadership, and Murphy officers for making the deployment possible. Adams thanked residents as well, stating the initiative reflects expectations for strong public safety, responsible financial management, and environmental stewardship.
