A Heritage Reborn

The story of the California Special began in the 1960s, when California dealers — responsible for a large portion of Mustang sales — collaborated with Ford to create a unique, regionally inspired package. That first special edition, launched in 1968, became an instant icon with its distinctive red and black accents and aerodynamic styling.

Now, over half a century later, Ford designers have reinterpreted the theme for the electric age. “We made some bold changes,” said Stefan Taylor, exterior designer at Ford. “We are creating something new for Mustang brand today while making sure we respect its heritage.”

Modern California Design

The 2026 Mustang Mach-E GT California Special introduces Rave Blue, a new hue symbolizing the West Coast’s vibrant coastline. “Rave Blue travels from light to dark, just like ocean water,” explained Kristen Keenan, color and materials designer. “It’s extremely chromatic, going to a blue violet in some cases. It’s just a beautiful dynamic color.”

Rave Blue now defines the California Special’s aesthetic, appearing across wheel details, grille accents, badges, and interior stitching. The Mach-E GT edition complements its two-door sibling’s design but carves out a distinct identity. “We didn’t want to copy and paste what we did with the Mustang two-door,” Taylor noted.

Distinctive touches include:

  • 20-inch carbonized gray wheels with GT/CS logos and gloss black aero covers
  • Illuminated Rave Blue pony emblem on the grille
  • California coastline-inspired hood graphic with layered gray, black, and blue sunset lines

Inside, performance seats feature Navy Pier ActiveX and Miko materials, accented with reflective blue and silver stripes. The center console, steering wheel, and floor mats echo the same meticulous details.

Powered by Passion and Community

True to its origins, the 2026 California Special draws inspiration from Mustang’s enthusiast community. Both Keenan and Taylor — Mustang owners themselves — attend car shows and owner events to understand how fans personalize their vehicles. The Rave Blue wheel accents, for instance, were inspired by modified Mustangs showcased at The SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

“At car shows and Mustang events, you see all sorts of modified Mustang vehicles,” said Taylor. “Personalization is such a big part of what people love about the brand, so we wanted to give potential customers a package that stands out and offers something unique.”

The California Special package is priced at $2,495 above the GT base price of $53,395. The 2026 Mustang Mach-E lineup starts at $37,795, with deliveries expected to begin in Q1 2026.
