Nissan Formula E Team enters Round 2 of the 2025/26 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship at the Mexico City E-Prix with momentum from its Season 11 victory at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. Defending champion Oliver Rowland won from fourth on the grid at this venue last season.
Highlights
- Rowland secured second place at the São Paulo season opener after advancing from 13th on the grid
- Track modifications for Season 12 include removal of the back straight chicane, creating additional overtaking opportunities at Turn 9
- Nissan became the first manufacturer to commit to the GEN4 era through 2030
- The circuit sits 2,250 meters above sea level, presenting unique physical challenges for drivers
Season 12 Momentum
Both Rowland and teammate Norman Nato demonstrated competitive pace during the December season opener in Brazil. Rowland’s drive from 13th to second earned 18 points for the team. Nato showed strong performance despite not finishing in the points.
The Mexico City E-Prix marks the 10th running at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, making it the joint-fourth most visited venue in Formula E history alongside Circuit de Monaco. The championship has included this event since Season 2, with only 2021 absent from the schedule.
Circuit Characteristics
The 2.63-kilometer layout features the distinctive stadium section through Turns 10-14. Drivers navigate grandstand-lined corners before entering the long start/finish straight.
For Season 12, organizers removed the chicane on the back straight. This change opens Turn 9 as a primary overtaking zone alongside Turn 1. The high altitude causes tires to overheat more quickly than at sea-level circuits.
Weekend Schedule
Track action begins Friday with Free Practice 1 at 16:00 local time (UTC-6). Saturday’s schedule includes:
- Free Practice 2: 07:30
- Qualifying: 09:40
- Race (36 laps): 14:05
Historical Significance
Rowland noted that winners of the Mexico City E-Prix have claimed the drivers’ championship in each of the last three Formula E seasons. His Season 11 victory contributed to his title-winning campaign, which included seven podiums, four victories, and three pole positions.
Nissan’s Formula E Commitment
Nissan entered Formula E in Season 5 (2018/19) as the first and only Japanese manufacturer in the series. The company acquired the e.dams race team in April 2022, taking full ownership of its championship operations.
In March 2024, Nissan became the first manufacturer to sign for the GEN4 era running through 2030. This commitment aligns with the automaker’s Ambition 2030 electrification targets and its goal to achieve carbon neutrality across operations and product life cycles by 2050.
Reserve and development driver Sam Bird has supported the team’s Mexico City preparation through simulator work focused on tire management at altitude.
