Nissan Previews 2027 Rogue Hybrid e-POWER at Vision Event

Nissan has previewed the all-new 2027 Rogue Hybrid e-POWER at its Vision event in Japan and confirmed the return of the Xterra as a U.S.-built, body-on-frame SUV targeted for late 2028.

Nissan has offered a first look at the all-new 2027 Rogue Hybrid e-POWER during a global media event in Japan outlining its new long-term strategy, “Mobility Intelligence for Everyday Life.” The preview was accompanied by confirmation that the Xterra nameplate will return as a U.S.-built, body-on-frame SUV. Full product details on the Rogue will follow closer to its launch, which Nissan has scheduled for late 2026 in the U.S. and Canada.

Highlights

  • All-new 2027 Rogue will be the first U.S.-market Nissan equipped with hybrid e-POWER
  • Xterra returns as a U.S.-produced, body-on-frame SUV targeted for launch in late 2028
  • Up to five U.S.-built models planned on a new body-on-frame platform, with V6 or V6 Hybrid powertrains
  • Rogue/X-Trail family has sold nearly 10 million units globally since 2000, including roughly 4 million in the U.S.

Strategic Context: Mobility Intelligence for Everyday Life

The Rogue and Xterra reveals anchor the product side of Nissan’s new long-term vision, which the company introduced alongside its vehicle previews. The strategy combines AI-Defined Vehicles, a choice-driven approach to electrification, and a tighter global portfolio focused on the U.S., Japan, and China.

The Rogue remains Nissan’s top-selling model in the U.S. compact SUV segment, and its transition to hybrid e-POWER marks the technology’s first deployment in a mainstream North American nameplate. Nissan has confirmed the new Rogue uses the automaker’s third-generation series hybrid system, with dual electric motors driving all four wheels.

How Hybrid e-POWER Works

Nissan’s e-POWER is a series hybrid architecture that differs structurally from the parallel hybrid systems used by most competitors. A gasoline engine operates solely as an onboard generator, producing electricity to power dual electric motors that drive the wheels. The engine never mechanically connects to the drivetrain.

According to Nissan, the setup delivers the instant torque and responsiveness of an electric vehicle without the need for plug-in charging. The company has sold nearly 2 million e-POWER vehicles across 68 markets since the technology launched in Japan in 2016, with earlier deployments in the Note, Kicks, X-Trail, Qashqai, Serena, and Sylphy.

Executive Commentary

Ponz Pandikuthira, senior vice president and Chief Product & Planning Officer, Nissan Americas, framed the Rogue transition as pivotal to the brand’s North American strategy.

“Rogue has long been at the heart of Nissan’s success in the U.S. and Canada, and the next generation represents a major step forward for this incredibly important model,” Pandikuthira said. “With hybrid e-POWER, the all-new Rogue will bring the smooth, responsive feel of electric motor driving to one of the most popular compact SUVs in North America, while staying true to what customers value most – efficiency, confidence and everyday usability.”

Xterra Returns on New Body-on-Frame Platform

The return of the Xterra, targeted for late 2028, signals a broader shift in Nissan’s North American manufacturing and product strategy. The SUV will be built in the United States on a new body-on-frame architecture intended to underpin up to five U.S.-built models across the Nissan and INFINITI brands, with potential expansion into pickups and multi-row SUVs.

The platform will offer a choice of V6 or V6 Hybrid powertrains. Nissan has not yet disclosed specific output figures, fuel economy targets, or hybrid system architecture for the Xterra family. The company said additional details on both the Rogue Hybrid e-POWER and the Xterra will be released as each vehicle approaches its market launch.
