Ohme Highlights UK EV Charging Cost Advantage

Ohme says UK EV drivers using smart energy tariffs could travel up to 500 miles for £10 as the Standard Variable Tariff drops in April.

Ohme, the UK’s largest home EV charging company, is pointing to the April 1 drop in the UK’s Standard Variable Tariff (SVT) as further evidence that home charging remains far cheaper than petrol. The company says drivers using a smart energy tariff through its platform could travel up to 500 miles for just £10 (approximately $13 USD).

Highlights

  • The UK SVT drops to 24.67p/kWh (~$0.33/kWh) on April 1, reducing home charging costs for all EV drivers.
  • Ohme claims drivers on smart tariffs such as Intelligent Octopus Go (8p/kWh, ~$0.11/kWh) could achieve up to 500 miles per £10 spent.
  • At the new SVT rate, an EV could travel roughly 160 miles for £10, compared to just 60 miles for a typical petrol car.
  • Ohme serves as the official charger provider for Mercedes-Benz, Volvo Cars, and the Volkswagen Group in the UK and Ireland.

SVT Reduction and Smart Tariff Savings

Beginning April 1, the UK’s regulated SVT for electricity falls to 24.67p/kWh. At that rate, Ohme estimates an EV driver could cover approximately 160 miles on £10 worth of electricity. However, the company notes that drivers pairing its hardware with a smart tariff — such as Octopus Energy’s Intelligent Octopus Go plan at 8p/kWh — could stretch the same £10 to roughly 500 miles.

By comparison, Ohme calculates a typical petrol-powered vehicle would travel only about 60 miles on the equivalent spend. The gap has widened further, the company says, as UK petrol prices remain volatile.

Executive Commentary

“Charging an EV with Ohme on a smart energy tariff at home will always be the most affordable place for drivers to charge their vehicles,” said Ohme CEO David Watson. “And at a time when petrol prices are becoming increasingly volatile, there’s never been a better time to drive an EV — after all, who wouldn’t want to be able to do 500 miles for just £10?”

OEM Partnerships

Ohme currently holds official charger provider agreements with Mercedes-Benz, Volvo Cars, and the Volkswagen Group across the UK and Ireland. Additional UK partnerships include Genesis, Hyundai, Smart, Suzuki, and XPeng. The company also serves as the exclusive charger provider for customers on the Motability scheme, which it describes as the largest fleet operator in the UK. Internationally, Ohme supplies Ford in Ireland and Hyundai in France.
