A New Era of Sustainable Waste Collection
The introduction of this electric truck marks a significant step for Action Carting, a subsidiary of Interstate Waste Services (IWS). The company’s selection as a designated hauler in New York City’s Commercial Waste Zone program prompted this green initiative. The program is designed to dramatically reduce the environmental impact of waste collection across the city. Once fully implemented, it is expected to decrease both truck traffic and related emissions by half.
The vehicle itself, a Mack LR Electric, represents the latest in sustainable automotive technology. It is equipped with advanced batteries and a regenerative braking system. This technology captures the energy generated from the frequent stops on collection routes, using it to recharge the batteries and extend the truck’s operational range. Beyond its environmental benefits, the electric truck operates much more quietly than traditional diesel models, reducing noise pollution in residential areas. It also incorporates advanced safety features to protect both the public and sanitation workers.
Community and Corporate Collaboration
This initiative is a collaborative effort aimed at fostering a greener urban environment. “The introduction of our first electric truck is a testament to Action’s community-focused approach to sustainable waste management,” stated Mike DiBella, CEO of Interstate Waste Services. He emphasized that this is only the initial phase of the company’s planned transition to a fully electric fleet.
The partnership with Sesame Workshop adds a creative and family-friendly element to the campaign. “There’s no character who appreciates collecting trash more than Oscar the Grouch,” said Jennifer Ahearn, Senior Vice President at Sesame Workshop. The collaboration seeks to leverage Oscar’s popularity to inspire New Yorkers of all ages to take recycling and cleanliness seriously. Josh Haraf, Market Vice President for IWS in New York City, noted that this initiative sets a new benchmark for sustainable waste management while making the message of environmental responsibility accessible to everyone.
