PGT Trucking Initiates First Shipment of Low-GHG Steel via Nikola’s Electric Vehicle

What’s Happening

PGT Trucking, a front-runner in flatbed transportation, has made its first-ever shipment of low-greenhouse-gas (GHG) intensity steel using Nikola’s Class 8 battery-electric truck. The shipment was dispatched from Nucor’s fresh establishment in Brandenburg, KY, to a local fabricator. This innovative project is part of PGT Trucking’s ongoing sustainable shipping solutions initiative.

Why It Matters

The occasion marked the first-ever shipment of low GHG steel carried by a Class 8 zero-emissions vehicle. This pivotal event saw team members, media, and local authorities invited to Nucor Brandenburg for a rare look at the sustainable equipment and goods transforming the steel and transport sectors. The collaboration between PGT Trucking, Nikola, and Nucor reflects the companies’ shared commitment towards a greener future, emphasizing the crucial role of sustainability in the shipping and steel industries.

Key Points

Gregg Troian, PGT Trucking President, expressed his pride in collaborating with companies like Nikola and Nucor that support a greener future. He noted that such partnerships will boost PGT’s “Future of Flatbed®” initiatives, propelling them toward their ambitious goal of a 35% emissions reduction in company-owned equipment by 2025.

Attendees were privy to official presentations from industry leaders and then toured the Nikola Class 8 battery-electric semi-truck and its charging station. Nucor EVP Al Behr highlighted the company’s long-standing focus on producing steel with a low carbon footprint, reaffirming their ongoing efforts to reduce their GHG intensity further.

Nucor has installed charging stations at numerous mills to facilitate the use of battery-electric flatbed trucks. A short-haul delivery using this truck is projected to slash carbon emissions by 40% and lead to a 20% energy cost savings per trip. Jason Roycht, Nikola Global Head, echoed the importance of partnerships in pushing the industry toward zero-emission trucking.

Bottom Line

The revolutionary collaboration aligns the business goals of PGT Trucking with the broader environmental objectives of the industry, thereby promoting a more efficient and environmentally clean transportation paradigm. As per a study by the North American Council for Freight Efficiency, swapping half of the heavy-duty regional haul tractors with battery-electric trucks could save up to 29.4 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent annually, signaling a potential sea change in the freight industry.
