In a market increasingly dominated by Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs), the Polestar 3 has emerged as a leader in child safety, setting a new benchmark for the industry. As families continue to favor SUVs for their perceived practicality and safety, the Polestar 3’s exceptional performance in child occupant protection tests highlights the importance of rigorous safety standards.
Key Highlights:
- Polestar 3 achieves highest child safety score in nine years
- Five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP
- Other SUVs tested with mixed results
- Growing popularity of SUVs among families
- Importance of independent safety testing

The Polestar 3, a five-seat electric large SUV, achieved an impressive 93% score for child occupant protection in Euro NCAP’s latest tests—the highest of any passenger car assessed in the past nine years. This score stands out as it was earned under Euro NCAP’s most demanding protocols to date. The vehicle excelled in both frontal offset and side barrier crash tests, offering excellent protection for child dummies representing six and ten-year-olds. It also features advanced safety systems, such as a clear display of front airbag status for rear-facing child seats and a detection system to prevent locking the car if a child is left inside. Overall, the Polestar 3 earned a five-star safety rating across four categories: Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, Vulnerable Road Users, and Safety Assist.
Other SUVs tested showed varied results. The BYD SEALION 7 matched the Polestar 3’s child safety score and secured a five-star rating, though it lagged in other areas. The Cupra TERRAMAR also earned five stars with strong performances across multiple categories. However, issues were found in the GEELY EX5, Hongqi E-HS9, and JAECOO 7 PHEV, including faulty detection systems, airbag tears, and improper deployment, emphasizing the value of independent testing.
SUVs accounted for 54% of new car sales globally in 2024, up from 51% in 2023, with families drawn to their safety and practicality. Euro NCAP’s rigorous assessments provide impartial guidance, helping consumers choose safer vehicles in a competitive market. The Polestar 3’s standout performance underscores the potential for SUVs to prioritize occupant protection.
