Porsche Accelerates Push for Global eFuel Production with Industrial Plant Opening in Chile

Punta Arenas, Chile – Porsche has partnered with international companies and the Chilean operating company, Highly Innovative Fuels (HIF) to initiate the industrial production of synthetic fuels. The ‘Haru Oni’ pilot plant in Punta Arenas, Chile, was officially opened, and the Porsche Executive Board members performed the first ceremonial fueling of a Porsche 911 with synthetic fuel produced at the site. The eFuels are created using wind energy to produce CO2-neutral operation of petrol engines.

According to Barbara Frenkel, Member of the Executive Board for Procurement at Porsche AG, “Porsche is committed to a double-e path: e-mobility and eFuels as a complementary technology. Using eFuels reduces CO2 emissions.” The company aims to continue pushing forward the industrial production of synthetic fuels globally, and the eFuels pilot plant is leading the way.

Porsche’s eFuel production pilot phase is targeting 130,000 liters per year, and the fuel will initially be used in lighthouse projects such as the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup and at Porsche Experience Centers. Scaling will take the project in Chile up to 55 million liters per year by the middle of the decade, with a projected capacity of 550 million liters after two years. The location in the south of Chile, Punta Arenas, offers optimal wind conditions for eFuel production.

The company aims to achieve a CO2-neutral balance sheet across the entire value chain by 2030, including a CO2-neutral usage phase for future all-electric models. Synthetic fuels complement electromobility and are part of the company’s sustainability strategy. Porsche has invested more than $100 million in the development and production of eFuels, including $75 million in HIF Global LLC in April 2022. The company plans, builds and operates eFuel plants in Chile, the United States, and Australia.
