Porsche Refocuses Motorsport on IMSA, Formula E

Porsche AG is realigning its motorsport focus to the IMSA series and Formula E, ending its factory WEC program. The move emphasizes EV development and the crucial North American market.

Porsche AG has announced a comprehensive realignment of its motorsport strategy, concentrating its factory efforts on two key series: the North American IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. This strategic shift underscores the brand’s commitment to specific markets and technological development.

Key Highlights

  • Porsche Motorsport will focus factory efforts on the IMSA series and Formula E.
  • Factory involvement in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) will not be continued after the current season.
  • Formula E is prioritized as a development environment for high-performance electric vehicle technology.
  • IMSA participation highlights the importance of the North American market.
  • Customer racing remains an important pillar of the brand’s motorsport strategy.

Strategic Realignment for Future Victories

As part of its realignment, Porsche Motorsport will compete with the Porsche 963 in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the Porsche 99X Electric in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. This concentration of resources is designed to continue the brand’s long tradition of fighting for overall victories.

Motorsport has always been an essential part of the Porsche brand, serving as a development platform for future technology and a showcase for the potential of its sports cars. However, due to current circumstances, Porsche Penske Motorsport will conclude its factory involvement in the WEC at the end of the current season.

Formula E as a Development Hub

Porsche’s participation in Formula E provides valuable insights for its electric production sports cars. According to Dr. Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board for Development at Porsche AG, the company will continue to drive forward the development of high-performance vehicles within this competitive environment.

The introduction of fourth-generation Formula E cars for Season 13 (2026/27) is expected to bring further development freedom. This will enable Porsche to achieve an even steeper learning curve for its all-electric production vehicles.

Emphasizing the North American Market

The brand’s involvement in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, which features the 24 Hours of Daytona as its highlight race, underlines the significance of the North American market and endurance racing for Porsche. In addition to the factory commitments, customer racing will continue to be a foundational element of the company’s motorsport activities.

“With the Porsche 963 in the North American IMSA series and the Porsche 99X Electric in the Formula E World Championship, we want to continue to fight for overall victories in the future,” stated Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President Porsche Motorsport. “That is our tradition and our focus.”
