The Pd18 Gen5 IWM embodies over 15 years of development, leveraging the combined 700 person-years of experience from Protean’s engineering team. This product is designed to meet the rigorous demands of the automotive industry, including harsh environmental conditions like potholes, water, and chemical exposure. The Gen 5 IWM also achieves an industry first by being validated for ISO26262 safety standards, setting another benchmark for in-wheel motor technology.

Stephen Lambert, Chief Technology Officer of Protean Electric, emphasized the significance of this achievement: “In-wheel motors are proving to be a pivotal, enabling technology for the next generation of EVs. However, much like the first EVs, there needs to be a testing and validation rulebook set out.”

Protean’s modular design approach allows for faster development of product variations, accommodating different configurations, including integrated and detached inverters. The 400Vdc product is currently available, with 800Vdc products expected by the end of 2024.

Protean Electric will showcase its Gen 5 Pd18 at the upcoming Cenex Expo 2024 in the UK, demonstrating the latest in IWM technology and solidifying its role in the future of zero-emission mobility.
