Proterra Adds U.S. Cell Option to Onyx Battery Platform for 2027

Proterra will add a U.S. cell option to its Onyx heavy-duty battery platform in Q1 2027, an onshoring move the company says will lift American content by more than 600%.

Proterra has announced a U.S. cell option for its Onyx modular battery platform, with shipments scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027. The move is designed to expand domestic content for North American heavy-duty and commercial vehicle OEMs facing tighter procurement and regulatory requirements. Proterra said the U.S. cell offering anchors a broader onshoring strategy that, on the company’s stated math, will lift American content in Onyx packs by more than 600%.

Highlights

  • U.S. cell option for the Onyx platform is open for orders now, with first shipments in Q1 2027
  • Proterra projects American content across the Onyx pack to increase by over 600%
  • Effort is positioned to align with Buy America and Build America, Buy America (BABA) frameworks
  • Onshoring strategy builds on existing U.S. sites in Burlingame, California and Greer, South Carolina

A Domestic Cell Option for Heavy-Duty Applications

The Onyx platform supplies battery systems for commercial trucks, buses, and off-highway equipment, and was previously detailed in coverage of the H2-23 pack in the Onyx Strata series. The new U.S. cell variant retains the platform’s modular architecture while shifting cell sourcing onshore. Proterra said the change addresses procurement requirements, customer preferences, and regulatory frameworks that increasingly favor domestic content.

The company described its approach as broader than cell sourcing alone. According to Proterra, the strategy also covers onshoring and nearshoring for battery pack and module components, along with other major internal subsystems. The stated goals are reduced disruption risk, geographic diversification, and scalable production for OEM partners.

CEO Frames the Move as a Market Response

Proterra CEO Chris Bailey tied the announcement to OEM procurement signals. “The market is asking for greater supply chain certainty and stronger domestic content. We’re answering. This investment ensures we can deliver both while continuing to lead in performance and safety,” Bailey said.

The company’s messaging links the U.S. cell rollout to performance attributes it claims for the Onyx line, including high energy density, durability, and an advanced safety architecture. Specific performance figures, third-party validation data, and pricing for the U.S. cell variant were not disclosed in the announcement.

Policy and Manufacturing Context

Proterra positioned the announcement against a shifting policy environment, citing Buy America and Build America, Buy America (BABA) compliance as a customer-facing benefit. Domestic content rules have become a recurring procurement factor for transit agencies and federally funded fleet buyers, and they are also shaping commercial vehicle supplier strategies. Other battery makers — including Lyten, which secured U.S.-sourced sulfur for its lithium-sulfur production — have made similar moves to localize materials and reduce exposure to overseas supply chains.

Proterra’s U.S. footprint includes a technology center in Burlingame, California, and a battery manufacturing facility in Greer, South Carolina. The Greer plant, originally part of Proterra’s transit bus operation, became the assembly hub for the company’s battery business and was acquired by Volvo Group in early 2024 as part of a $210 million transaction following Proterra’s Chapter 11 filing.

What’s Next

Proterra is taking orders now for the U.S. cell Onyx variant ahead of Q1 2027 deliveries. The company has not published a specific cell supplier, energy density specifications for the U.S. cell version, or a breakdown of which Onyx subsystems are covered by the broader 600%-plus domestic content figure.
