Rivian R1T Achieves Top Safety Status

Rivian‘s 2024 R1T crew cab pickup has been distinguished with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ award, signifying its superior protection capabilities, especially in the back seat. This accolade was secured following a positive evaluation in the IIHS’s updated moderate overlap front test, a rigorous assessment designed to measure a vehicle’s ability to protect occupants during a frontal collision.

Key Highlights:

  • 2024 Rivian R1T earns IIHS Top Safety Pick+
  • Excelled in updated moderate overlap front test
  • Enhanced second-row safety proved with low injury risk to dummies
  • Meets stringent criteria across multiple safety tests
  • Standard front crash prevention system receives acceptable rating

The award criteria for the Top Safety Pick+ have become more stringent, requiring vehicles to achieve at least an acceptable rating in the newly updated moderate overlap front test. The R1T previously secured the lower-tier Top Safety Pick due to pending results in this updated test. The inclusion of a rear seat dummy in the updated test aims to encourage manufacturers to bolster safety for all passengers, not just those in the front.

In the R1T’s evaluation, low risk of injury was recorded for the second-row dummy, with the vehicle’s safety systems ensuring optimal positioning of safety belts and maintaining a safe distance between the dummy’s head and the front seatback. This performance underscores Rivian’s commitment to passenger safety across all seating positions.

To qualify for either the Top Safety Pick or the Top Safety Pick+ awards, vehicles must also achieve good ratings in the small overlap front test and the updated side test, as well as have acceptable or good-rated headlights available across all trims. Moreover, a good or acceptable rating in a revised pedestrian front crash prevention evaluation, which now combines daytime and nighttime conditions into a single test, is required. The R1T’s front crash prevention system was deemed acceptable under these new criteria.

Rivian’s achievement with the R1T emphasizes the company’s focus on comprehensive safety features, enhancing confidence for drivers and passengers alike.
