WeaveGrid, a leading provider of smart charging software, and American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Rivian have announced a new collaboration. This partnership will integrate WeaveGrid’s advanced software into Rivian vehicles to deliver new grid-integrated smart charging capabilities, which are expected to become available later this year. The initiative is designed to allow Rivian owners to seamlessly participate in utility-managed charging programs that help balance energy demand and promote grid stability.
Key Highlights
- The partnership enables Rivian drivers to join utility programs that offer financial incentives for smart charging.
- By optimizing charging schedules, the collaboration aims to support grid reliability and lower overall energy costs for communities.
- The integration focuses on shifting EV charging to times when energy is cheaper and cleaner, advancing decarbonization efforts.
- Driver data and vehicle performance are protected through secure, OEM-authorized connections.
Optimizing At-Home Charging
With over 80% of all electric vehicle charging taking place at home, optimizing this process is crucial for reducing both costs and carbon emissions. However, a significant challenge for automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) is coordinating charging programs across the more than 3,000 utilities in the United States. This collaboration leverages WeaveGrid’s established network of utility partnerships to provide a streamlined solution.
Through this integration, Rivian drivers can enroll in programs that automatically adjust their vehicle’s charging schedule. This system ensures vehicles charge during off-peak hours when electricity is often generated from cleaner sources and is less expensive, all while ensuring the vehicle reaches the desired state of charge set by the customer. This approach not only helps drivers save money but also supports a more resilient and sustainable energy grid for everyone.
A Software-First Approach to Value
This initiative highlights the growing importance of software in modern vehicles. “This collaboration is an example of the impact true software-defined EVs will have in our transition to a more sustainable future,” said Wassym Bensaid, Rivian’s Chief Software Officer. By building on a robust software platform, Rivian can continuously enhance its vehicles with new features that deliver long-term value to customers and utility partners.
The partnership prioritizes a seamless and secure user experience. Both companies emphasize that driver trust is foundational, ensuring that all data is protected through authorized and secure connections. Apoorv Bhargava, CEO and Cofounder of WeaveGrid, noted that the integration allows the company to “deliver real-time, grid-responsive charging while elevating the already premium driver experience.” Ultimately, the collaboration makes it easier than ever for EV drivers to contribute to a cleaner, more reliable energy future.
