Scania has acquired the Industrial Division of Northvolt Systems, a strategic step to advance its electrification capabilities for off-road applications. This acquisition includes production facilities, a research and development center, and a team of approximately 260 employees. It strengthens Scania’s commitment to sustainable transport solutions, particularly in demanding industrial sectors.

The Industrial Division specializes in battery systems for heavy industry and off-highway markets, such as construction, mining, and material handling. Based in Gdańsk, Poland, and Tomteboda, Stockholm, Sweden, these facilities enhance Scania’s ability to deliver innovative electrified solutions. The division’s expertise complements Scania’s Power Solutions unit, known for over a century of reliable powertrain engineering.
Sara Hermansson, Head of Scania Power Solutions, welcomed the move, saying, “This acquisition adds valuable battery technology expertise, enhancing our modular approach to electrification. We’re excited to integrate the team into Scania.” The division will operate as a stand-alone entity under Scania Ventures and New Business, aligning with the company’s strategy to foster transformative growth.

Jonas Hernlund, Head of Energy & Infrastructure at Scania Ventures, emphasized the deal’s importance: “Combining Northvolt’s battery knowledge with Scania’s industry experience drives innovation and supports our customers’ shift to sustainable solutions.” Elin Åkerström, Vice President of Northvolt Systems Industrial, added, “Joining Scania opens a new chapter, uniting two leaders in electrification to deliver greater customer value.”
The agreement with the trustee ensures operational continuity, though the purchase price remains undisclosed. This acquisition positions Scania as a frontrunner in off-road electrification, meeting rising demand for sustainable industrial solutions with cutting-edge technology and expertise.
