Scania has announced a landmark agreement to supply the South Australian state government with 60 new battery-electric city buses. This significant deal with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) marks a major step in the state’s goals for sustainability and the electrification of its public transport network. The agreement builds upon a strong, pre-existing relationship between the two parties and boosts Scania’s leadership position in Australia’s sustainable transport sector.
Key Highlights
- A landmark agreement has been signed for 60 battery-electric city buses to be used in Adelaide.
- The first set of vehicles is scheduled for delivery in November 2025.
- The deal includes options for the government to order additional buses annually through June 2029.
- Each bus will have a maximum range exceeding 400 kilometers and will be equipped with Scania’s full suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems.
A Major Fleet Electrification Initiative
This order represents the beginning of South Australia’s commitment to electrifying its entire fleet of over 1,000 buses. The state already operates 825 Scania vehicles, and this new agreement significantly strengthens the partnership. According to Anna Ställberg, Head of Urban Solutions at Scania Group, this deal is pivotal for the region. “This landmark deal means Scania will support South Australia’s transition to a cleaner, more sustainable public transport network, while also increasing our penetration of the Australian electric vehicle market,” she stated.
The long-term nature of the agreement, with options for more buses through 2029, underscores the confidence the DIT has in Scania’s technology and service. “This order is not only strategically significant for Scania; it also demonstrates the strength of our ongoing partnership with DIT,” said Steven Godbold, Contract Manager for Scania Australia.
Advanced Features and Safety
The new vehicles are Scania K-series two-axle low-entry buses designed specifically for urban routes in the city of Adelaide. The bus bodies will be supplied by Volgren, and each vehicle will have a seating capacity for 43 passengers.
A crucial feature of the new fleet is the inclusion of Scania’s comprehensive Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). These systems are engineered to enhance road safety by actively supporting the driver. The technology helps maintain the vehicle’s position on the road while controlling speed and distance from other vehicles, as well as cyclists and pedestrians, making Adelaide’s streets safer for everyone. Production of the buses is set to begin later this year.
