Scania Wins 91 Battery-Electric Bus Order from VR Sweden

Scania has secured an order for 91 battery-electric Fencer f1 buses from VR Sweden, billed as one of the largest electric bus deals in Sweden to date, with service beginning June 2027.

Scania has secured an order for 91 battery-electric buses from VR Sweden in what the manufacturer describes as one of the largest electric bus deals signed in Sweden to date. The buses will enter service in the Södertälje area in June 2027 under VR Sweden’s contract with Stockholm regional transport authority SL, awarded last year. Production runs through Scania’s battery-electric bus platform, with battery assembly handled at the manufacturer’s facility in Södertälje.

Highlights

  • 91 Scania Fencer f1 BEV buses ordered by VR Sweden for the Södertälje and Nykvarn network
  • Fleet split between 32 units in 4×2 configuration and 59 units in 6×2*4 three-axle configuration
  • All buses carry 445 kWh of installed energy
  • Service launch scheduled for June 2027

Order Composition and Configuration

The 91-unit fleet pairs two chassis variants on Scania’s battery-electric bus platform. Thirty-two buses will be delivered in a 4×2 layout, while 59 will use the 6×2*4 three-axle configuration, a body style Scania added to its lineup as a higher-capacity option for city, suburban, and short intercity routes. Every unit in the order carries 445 kWh of installed energy.

The buses are the Fencer f1 BEV model, built on Scania’s European-produced battery-electric bus platform. According to the source, the deal is Scania Sweden’s single largest delivery of battery-electric vehicles to date.

Contract Background

VR Sweden won the underlying public transport contract from SL — the regional transit authority for the Stockholm area — in 2025, taking on bus operations for Södertälje and Nykvarn. The 91-bus procurement equips that contract ahead of its scheduled traffic launch in June 2027.

“The investment is an important step in the transition to electrified public transport and enables reduced local emissions, while ensuring attractive and reliable traffic for passengers as well as a good working environment for drivers and maintenance personnel,” said Anders Frykman, Bus Director at VR Sweden.

Local Production Footprint

Scania’s headquarters, production operations, and battery assembly plant in Södertälje sit in the same region where the buses will operate. The order covers the full lifecycle from development and planning through traffic start, vehicle service, and long-term support.

“With development and battery assembly in Södertälje, and close cooperation throughout the process, we will offer a solution that is both robust and sustainable,” said Christopher Svensson, Key Account Manager at Scania Sweden.

The three-axle 6×2*4 variant accounts for the majority of the order. Scania introduced that low-entry three-axle layout on the existing battery-electric platform to add passenger capacity beyond what the original two-axle Fencer f1 supports.
