smart Concept #2 Debuts in Beijing, Previews All-Electric fortwo Reinvention

smart unveiled the Concept #2 in Beijing, previewing an all-electric two-seater city car on its new ECA platform. The production smart #2 will debut at the Paris Motor Show this October.

smart pulled the covers off its Concept #2 at the brand’s Global Brand Event in Beijing on April 22, giving the clearest look yet at the all-electric two-seater that will revive the fortwo nameplate. The company, a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely, confirmed that a production model built on its new Electric Compact Architecture will make its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show in October. Full media assets and specifications are available through smart’s global press portal.

Highlights

  • Global debut of the smart Concept #2 previews a production all-electric two-seater city car due in October 2026.
  • Electric Compact Architecture (ECA) is smart’s newly developed, self-engineered platform for ultra-compact EVs.
  • Targeted specs on the concept include roughly 300 km of range, 10–80% DC fast charging in under 20 minutes, and V2L capability.
  • smart #6 EHD fastback sedan also had its world premiere at the event but is confirmed as a China-only model.

A Concept, Not a Production Vehicle

The Concept #2 is the first physical expression of the forthcoming smart #2, a model the company previously confirmed would return the brand to the A-segment two-seater category it originally defined with the fortwo. smart described the concept as styled exclusively by the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team under the “Love, Pure, Unexpected” brand design philosophy, with a matte white and warm gold two-tone finish and translucent surfaces that reveal detailing beneath.

Dimensionally, the concept measures 2,792 mm in total length with what smart calls a “wheels-at-the-corners” layout to maximize interior packaging. The company cited a 6.95-meter turning circle for the concept.

ECA: smart’s New Proprietary Platform

The Concept #2 is the first vehicle shown on smart’s Electric Compact Architecture, described by the company as self-developed and engineered specifically for ultra-compact EVs. smart says the production smart #2 will use the same architecture when it reaches series production.

The concept’s projected figures include an electric range of close to 300 km, DC fast charging from 10% to 80% in under 20 minutes, and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality. All figures are concept-stage estimates, and smart explicitly noted in a footnote that the range number is not a final WLTP value. None of the platform’s output, battery capacity, or architecture voltage has been disclosed.

Executive Perspective

Wolfgang Ufer, CEO of smart Europe, framed the reveal as the start of a broader European product push. “For me personally, it is a very special moment to present the smart Concept #2 as the first concrete outlook on the reinvention of our iconic two-seater,” Ufer said. “The Global Brand Event marks an important starting point for this new chapter of smart, which will culminate in a strong peak in Europe this autumn.”

Kai Sieber, Head of Design for smart at Mercedes-Benz Design, described the design remit. “We believe a city car should be more than a problem solver; it should spark joy,” Sieber said. “Carrying the heritage of the fortwo’s iconic design, the Concept #2 translates our bold personality into a new era where ‘Function becomes Fashion.'”

smart #6 EHD and Broader Lineup

Alongside the Concept #2, smart gave a world premiere to the #6 EHD, a premium fastback sedan that marks the brand’s entry into the segment. smart confirmed the #6 EHD will launch exclusively in China and will not be sold in European markets. The car was styled by the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team, with smart citing an aerodynamic silhouette it likened to a shark.

The brand said the smart family will grow from three to five global models this year, joining the existing smart #1, #3, and #5 lineup. smart says its vehicles are now sold in 40 markets, with its smart care service program scheduled to roll out across Europe from mid-2026.

What’s Next

The production smart #2 will debut at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026. A smart press conference at Auto Beijing 2026 is scheduled for April 24. smart has not released pricing, battery specifications, or market-by-market launch timing for the production #2, and the broader 2026 product roadmap remains subject to the Paris reveal for confirmation of final specifications.
