Turlock Unified School District (TUSD) has taken a significant step toward a sustainable future by introducing nine new electric school buses and advanced charging infrastructure. At a recent ribbon-cutting ceremony, the district, along with its project partners, showcased the initiative aimed at reducing air pollution and transitioning its transportation fleet to clean energy.
Key Highlights
- Turlock Unified School District has added nine electric Blue Bird buses to its fleet, replacing older diesel models.
- The project features advanced charging infrastructure developed in partnership with Schneider Electric and The Mobility House.
- A smart charge management system will maximize the use of on-site solar power, significantly minimizing utility costs.
- This initiative is part of the district’s long-term goal to operate a fully electric bus fleet by 2035.
A Collaborative Push for Clean Energy
The new electric buses will be powered by a combination of AC and DC chargers fed by solar canopies installed over the transportation center’s parking lot. A key component of this project is the charge management system from The Mobility House, which intelligently schedules charging to prioritize the use of solar energy. This strategic approach not only ensures the buses are powered by clean energy but also dramatically reduces the cost of electricity purchased from the local utility.
This achievement was made possible through a collaboration between TUSD, Schneider Electric, The Mobility House, Turlock Irrigation District, A-Z Bus Sales, Valley Air District, and NV5. Greg Hintler, CEO of The Mobility House North America, praised the project, stating, “Solar energy and electric buses are complementary technologies that provide a vision for the future of sustainable school transportation.”
Leading the Way in Sustainable Transportation
Schneider Electric and The Mobility House have a proven track record of successfully implementing electric school bus charging projects across California, including installations in Stockton and Modesto. Elliott Feldman, Program Manager at Schneider Electric, commended the district’s forward-thinking approach. “California school districts like Turlock are leading the way towards our electric future,” he noted. “Their ambition and drive to implement sustainable solutions is a testament to the role they play in their community.”
