Sustainable EV Chargers Combat Landfill Waste

Simpson & Partners, a UK-based sustainable EV charging company, is addressing the growing issue of electronic waste from outdated electric vehicle (EV) chargers. With EV technology advancing rapidly, many chargers become obsolete, contributing to landfill waste. The company estimates that over 100,000 chargers could end up in landfills by 2030 if not designed for longevity. Simpson & Partners is urging consumers to prioritize upgradeable chargers to support a sustainable future.

  • 100,000 chargers risk becoming landfill waste by 2030.
  • Simpson & Partners offers upgradeable EV chargers to prevent obsolescence.
  • New Home Series Gen V3 supports vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology.

Founded by Mandy and David Simpson, Simpson & Partners designs chargers with sustainability and longevity in mind. Unlike sealed units that require replacement when new technology emerges, their chargers feature upgradeable hardware and software. This ensures compatibility with advancements like vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, which allows EVs to return unused energy to the grid, transforming them into mobile energy storage systems. Their latest Home Series Gen V3 charger is the first to support V2G, aligning with standards like ISO 15118-20 and IEC 61851-1 Edition 4 for seamless vehicle-charger communication.

The company also announced that its Gen 2 and Gen 3 chargers now support the Intelligent Octopus Go tariff, offering six hours of low-cost electricity nightly for smart, eco-friendly charging. Customers can opt for the Octopus Intelligent Drive pack, a £30 monthly subscription for unlimited scheduled charging. Existing customers can upgrade their chargers for V2G functionality (£49) or Intelligent Octopus Go compatibility (£165 for Gen 1).

Simpson & Partners emphasizes transparency and cost-consciousness, offering a 10-year enclosure warranty and 5-year electronics warranty. By designing chargers that evolve with technology, the company aims to reduce waste and foster long-term customer relationships.
