Stadtwerke Ulm/Neu-Ulm (SWU) Verkehr GmbH is advancing its commitment to sustainable public transport by partnering with Daimler Buses to acquire 37 Mercedes-Benz eCitaro and eCitaro G buses. This significant investment, totaling 34.6 million euros, marks a pivotal step in expanding electromobility in Ulm and Neu-Ulm, Germany. The contract, signed on July 18, 2025, includes an option for nine additional buses, further strengthening SWU’s eco-friendly fleet. With 14 eCitaro G buses already in operation, SWU is on track to make battery-electric buses more than half of its fleet by 2027.
Key Highlights
- 37 new eCitaro buses ordered, with an option for nine more.
- 34.6 million euros invested in sustainable transport.
- NMC-4 batteries offer high power density and extended range.
- Flexible charging options, including depot and opportunity charging via pantograph.
- Advanced safety systems, such as Sideguard Assist 2 and Frontguard Assist.
- Digital Services Package enhances fleet management for 12 years.
- Over 41 million passengers transported annually by SWU.
Advanced Features of eCitaro Buses
The new fleet consists of 15 solo buses and 22 four-door articulated buses, measuring 18.3 meters. These buses accommodate up to 65 passengers in solo models and 111 passengers in articulated versions, ensuring high-capacity transport. Enhanced accessibility features, such as enlarged areas for wheelchairs, prams, and walking aids, cater to diverse passenger needs. A state-of-the-art CO₂ air conditioning system with advanced thermal management ensures passenger comfort.
Equipped with the latest NMC-4 lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt batteries, each with 111 kW of energy, the buses offer a longer range and support 300 kW quick charging. Flexible charging options include depot charging via sockets and opportunity charging at designated stops using a roof-mounted pantograph, supported by a precision camera system. These features enable the buses to handle demanding routes efficiently without requiring additional vehicles.
Cutting-Edge Safety and Digital Integration
Daimler Buses has integrated advanced safety systems to protect passengers and other road users. Sideguard Assist 2 warns of potential collisions with pedestrians and cyclists, while Frontguard Assist detects obstacles ahead. The Active Emergency Braking Assistant enhances safety by responding to imminent risks. Additionally, the Traffic Sign Assist system, supported by GPS and cameras, ensures compliance with speed limits through real-time alerts.
The buses are equipped with Daimler’s Digital Services Package, contracted for 12 years, which includes Omnibus On Uptime pro for real-time vehicle monitoring and diagnostics. Battery Monitoring optimizes battery life and ensures warranty compliance, while Omnipulse On integrates vehicle data into SWU’s existing fleet management systems, streamlining operations and reducing maintenance costs.
Strengthening Local Economy and Sustainability
Ralf Gummersbach, SWU Head of Transport, emphasized the value of partnering with a local manufacturer like Daimler Buses, based in Neu-Ulm. This collaboration ensures that a significant portion of the economic value remains in Germany, supporting local jobs and simplifying service and maintenance. By 2027, SWU aims to have over 50% of its fleet powered by battery-electric buses, significantly reducing emissions and enhancing sustainable transport for its 41 million annual passengers.
