TeraWatt Technology Inc., a California-based leader in next-generation lithium-ion battery production, has completed its first mass production facility in the greater Tokyo area, with preliminary operations starting in September 2024. This facility represents a significant step in TeraWatt’s mission to decarbonize gasoline-powered vehicles and devices by providing safer, lighter, and more powerful battery solutions. Commercial sales are expected to begin in 2026.

Key Highlights

  • First mass production facility completed in Tokyo, Japan, with operations starting in September 2024.
  • Seamless R&D-to-production operation established, enabling mass production and commercialization.
  • Full commercialization and gigawatt-hour production expected by 2026 and beyond to meet increasing demand.

TeraWatt Technology has previously been manufacturing and validating commercial-size cells for domestic and international customers at its two existing sites. With the completion of this new facility, the company now has a seamless pathway from research and development to mass production and commercialization. Products produced at this facility will undergo rigorous customer engineering validation before being sold as commercial lithium-ion batteries starting in 2026.

The next phase of capital investment will fully leverage the new facility’s capabilities to achieve gigawatt-hour scale production, helping meet growing customer demand while continuously enhancing productivity and production quality.

TeraWatt’s vision focuses on decarbonizing gasoline-powered vehicles and devices as a key aspect of achieving a sustainable future. This goal will be achieved through the electrification of mobility and industrial equipment using next-generation lithium-ion batteries. Despite the projected growth of the global battery market to $300 billion by 2030 and $700 billion by 2050, many challenges remain in achieving mass-scale commercialization and implementation. TeraWatt aims to overcome these hurdles by advancing its technologies and production processes.

Ken Ogata, Co-Founder and CEO of TeraWatt Technology, stated, “With the mission of ‘Electrifying all for the sustainable future,’ TeraWatt Technology remains committed to advancing grounded cell and manufacturing technologies that scale the next-generation batteries to mass production.”
