Toyota Motor Corporation has joined the “TOKYO H2” project, a significant public-private initiative launched by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. This collaboration is designed to position Tokyo as a global leader in hydrogen energy. To support this goal, Toyota is introducing its Crown model into the city’s growing fleet of fuel cell taxis, aiming to expand the adoption of clean energy transportation.
Key Highlights
- Toyota Motor Corporation is an official partner in the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s “TOKYO H2” project.
- The Crown fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) is being integrated into Tokyo’s taxi fleet to promote hydrogen use.
- Toyota plans to introduce 200 fuel cell taxi units by fiscal year 2025, contributing to the city’s target of approximately 600 by fiscal year 2030.
- The TOYOTA MIRAI Showroom has been renovated and reopened as the TOKYO H2 HUB to serve as a center for hydrogen collaboration and information.

Expanding the Fuel Cell Taxi Fleet
The introduction of the Crown FCEV into the taxi fleet is a strategic move to make hydrogen technology more visible and accessible to the public. The Crown offers passengers a premium travel experience, combining the exceptional quietness of a fuel cell vehicle with spacious rear seating and excellent ease of entry and exit. These features make it an ideal vehicle for comfortable, high-quality taxi service, setting it apart from conventional options.
By supporting the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s targets, Toyota is playing a crucial role in building the necessary infrastructure and demand for hydrogen. The company’s commitment to providing a substantial number of these vehicles will help create a virtuous cycle across the entire hydrogen supply chain, from production to use.
A Hub for Hydrogen Collaboration
Coinciding with the project’s launch, Toyota has renewed its information center in Minato City, Tokyo. Originally established in 2015 as the TOYOTA MIRAI Showroom, the facility has been reopened as the TOKYO H2 HUB. This renovated space will now function as a central point for collaboration among various companies and organizations dedicated to advancing a hydrogen-powered society. The hub will be instrumental in advancing the project’s objectives and promoting the wider adoption of hydrogen energy across different sectors.

The Vision of the TOKYO H2 Project
Led by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the TOKYO H2 project aims to accelerate cooperative efforts between the public and private sectors to popularize hydrogen. The initial focus is on commercial mobility, including fuel cell taxis and trucks. Participating organizations will implement a range of hydrogen-related initiatives. To enhance public awareness, the project utilizes a unified logo and design, making the expansion of hydrogen visible throughout the city and increasing interest among Tokyo’s residents. Following the taxi initiative, other commercial sector programs are expected to be rolled out in stages.
Toyota’s Commitment to a Hydrogen Future
Toyota fully supports the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s vision for the social implementation of hydrogen. The company positions hydrogen as a critical energy source for the future and is actively involved in numerous initiatives to promote its use in all areas, including producing, transporting, storing, and using. By working alongside the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and other partners, Toyota continues to expand its alliances to help realize a future where Tokyo leads the world in hydrogen technology.
