Toyota Launches bZ4X Touring BEV in Japan

Toyota launches the bZ4X Touring BEV in Japan with a 734 km range, 28-minute cold-weather rapid charging, expanded 619-liter cargo space, and 280 kW 4WD performance.

Toyota Motor Corporation has launched the bZ4X Touring, a new battery electric vehicle designed to pair long-range capability with expanded cargo utility. The model went on sale in Japan on February 25, 2026. It builds on the existing bZ4X platform with a longer body, larger luggage compartment, and improved charging performance in cold weather. Toyota developed the vehicle in response to global customer demand for BEVs suited to family leisure and outdoor activities.

Highlights

  • The bZ4X Touring achieves a class-leading 734 km driving range (WLTC) in the FWD configuration, using SiC power semiconductors and aerodynamic enhancements.
  • Cold-weather rapid charging reaches 80% in approximately 28 minutes at -10°C with battery preconditioning, addressing a persistent EV ownership concern.
  • Cargo volume expands to 619 liters (1,240 liters with rear seats folded), roughly 1.4 times more than the standard bZ4X.
  • The 4WD model delivers 280 kW of system output and 0-100 km/h acceleration in 4.6 seconds, with X-MODE standard for off-road stability.

Platform and Dimensions

The bZ4X Touring measures 4,830 mm long, 1,860 mm wide, and 1,675 mm tall, with a 2,850 mm wheelbase. Toyota designed the interior to maximize passenger comfort. Rear head clearance reaches 113 mm, while the front-to-rear couple distance spans 1,000 mm. As a result, the cabin accommodates five occupants without sacrificing cargo access.

The luggage area features a cargo length of 1,092 mm and a height of 850 mm with the 6:4 split-folding rear seats upright. Folding the seats extends cargo length to 1,850 mm. Additionally, rear-hatch-mounted levers allow seat folding directly from the cargo area. Four luggage hooks and four shopping hooks aid in securing items.

Powertrain and Performance

Two configurations are available. The FWD model uses a single AC synchronous motor paired with a 74.69 kWh lithium-ion battery. Meanwhile, the 4WD variant adds a second eAxle for a combined system output of 280 kW.

Toyota’s new 4WD control system distributes driving force between the front and rear axles based on individual tire conditions. It monitors steering input along with front/rear and left/right wheel speeds. This suppresses instability on irregular surfaces and improves cornering on snow and off-road terrain.

Furthermore, X-MODE offers three selectable drive modes that optimize driving force and brake coordination for rough terrain. The system was developed using Subaru Corporation’s AWD technology.

Charging

Range and Charging Performance

The FWD Z grade achieves 734 km of range per charge under the WLTC cycle. Several efficiency improvements contribute to that figure:

  • SiC power semiconductors in the eAxle reduce energy losses during power conversion.
  • A large roof spoiler and rear side spoiler enhance aerodynamic performance.
  • Optimized lower rear bumper geometry further reduces drag.

For charging, battery preconditioning adjusts the lithium-ion pack’s temperature before arriving at a rapid charger. When a charging station is pre-set in the navigation system, the system activates preconditioning based on estimated arrival time. This enables charging from 10% to 80% in approximately 28 minutes using a 150 kW (350A) rapid charger, even at -10°C.

Toyota also offers a standard 6 kW home charger (200V) as a dealer option. An optional demand controller manages household electricity consumption during charging to prevent circuit breaker trips.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The bZ4X Touring comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense. The system integrates Proactive Driving Assist, which provides deceleration and steering support for preceding vehicles and curves. Pre-collision braking is also included.

In addition, the vehicle features two Toyota Teammate advanced driving support technologies:

  • Advanced Drive supports the driver during highway traffic congestion under specific conditions.
  • Advanced Park with remote function assists with parking maneuvers.

Pricing and Availability

Toyota is offering the bZ4X Touring in a single Z grade with two drivetrain options. Pricing is as follows:

  • Z FWD: ¥5,750,000 (including consumption tax)
  • Z 4WD: ¥6,400,000 (including consumption tax)

Production takes place at the Yajima Plant operated by Subaru Corporation. Toyota has set a base sales volume of 920 units. The model is also scheduled to become available through the KINTO car subscription service starting around April 2026, with the FWD variant beginning at ¥77,440 per month on a seven-year plan.

Design and Customization

The exterior features a horizontal black LED rear combination lamp that spans from the center of the rear hatch door to both sides. Black 20-inch aluminum wheels, bridge-type roof rails, and front and rear skid plates reinforce the outdoor-oriented design. Five body colors are available, including the newly developed Brilliant Bronze Metallic with a Crystal Black Silica roof.

Inside, a low-profile horizontal instrument panel pairs with a 14-inch standalone center display. The display integrates navigation, air conditioning, and audio functions. A tray-shaped center console houses wireless charging and smartphone connectivity. Two interior color options are offered: Black and Khaki.

Toyota also provides dealer-option accessories including flex belts, cross bars, snow and leisure floor mats, and rear hatch door opening guards. Details are available on the bZ4X Touring custom style page.
