VinFast & Marubeni Repurpose EV Batteries for Greener Future

Vietnamese EV giant VinFast and Japanese trading powerhouse Marubeni have joined forces to breathe new life into used electric vehicle batteries. Through a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), they aim to establish a circular economy model for EV batteries, transforming them into powerful Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

This strategic partnership, announced during the Vietnam-Japan Economic Forum and the Commemorative Summit for the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation, marks a significant step towards a greener future.

Repurposing for a Sustainable Future:

Under the MOU, VinFast will provide the spent batteries while Marubeni, leveraging its partner’s exclusive recycling technology, will repurpose them into affordable and easily manufacturable BESS units. This innovative approach eliminates the need for traditional disassembly, processing, and repackaging, streamlining the process and reducing environmental impact.

The benefits are multifaceted:

  • Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Repurposing batteries extends their lifespan, minimizing the need for new ones and their associated carbon footprint.
  • Enhanced Energy Security: BESS units can store renewable energy generated from solar and wind power, making the grid more resilient and reliable.
  • Cost-Effective Solutions: Affordable BESS units can democratize access to clean energy storage, particularly in remote areas.

Quotes from Key Figures:

  • Mr. Pham Nhat Quan Anh, Deputy CEO of VinFast Manufacturing Division: “This collaboration marks a significant step in VinFast’s strategy to establish a circular economy model and further reduce the environmental footprint of our manufacturing activities.”
  • Mr. Satoru Harada, Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer of Power Division of Marubeni: “Leveraging our strengths and extensive experience in implementing large-scale energy projects, Marubeni expects to further enhance the strategic cooperation with VinFast to develop solutions that contribute to building a circular economy and promoting climate change mitigation policies.”

Beyond Vietnam:

This partnership extends beyond Vietnam’s borders, aiming to foster sustainable transportation development and emissions-free economic growth globally. By demonstrating the viability and benefits of repurposing EV batteries, VinFast and Marubeni hope to inspire similar initiatives worldwide, paving the way for a cleaner and greener future.
